The latest news about rewarding land-bankers instead of builing homes,
and of selling state houses at less than GV are both subjects which
should be causing us to think about alternatives. One of the
candidates for Auckland mayor (Crone?) suggested that those
land-banking should be levied with higher rates - that suggestion
seems to have dropped out of sight, but if a competitive advantage is
given through zoning, it is fair to expect that it will be used; if it
is not, I see no reason why the land should not attract rates based on
the developement that should have happened. That would be a fair
market reaction to favoured treatment by government / council, but it
seems the government is not even listening to their own people.

Add self-delusion to your catalogue of sins. They may indeed "work
hard", but it will be nugatory work unless and until they can convince
New Zealanders that they are, or could be, a coherent government-in-
