A Joshua Tree couple, whose three children were discovered living in a
large wooden box-like structure, has been ordered released from jail.
Daniel Panico, 73, and his wife, Mona Kirk, 51, made an appearance Tuesday morning in Joshua Tree Superior Court where a judge ordered the couple’s release from jail on their own recognizance after being held at the
sheriff’s Morongo Basin station, according to a courtroom bailiff.
Panico and Kirk were arrested last Wednesday when a sheriff’s deputy
discovered their children, ages 11, 13, and 14, had been living in the
wooden structure on the family’s cluttered property off a dirt road in
Joshua Tree for about four years. Bail was set at $300,000 each.
The pair pleaded not guilty to three counts each of child abuse during a hearing Friday in the same courthouse.
