I'm having a hard time with ubuntu server. (I think) I never had these
problems setting up message areas on windows. There is some kind of permission >problem and it's making me nuts trying to figure it out. And I REALLY don't >like the "SMC" crap! Thanks for letting me vent.

I can remember running into similar issues with permissions. It usually happened because I accidentally was either setting something up, or copying/moving something, while logged on as "su". Later, when the sbbs account would try to manipulate the files that were set up under "su" I
would have all sorts of permission issues.

Pain in the rear to go back and fix. :)

    Easy done. :)

Actually easily done with a chown -R :D

In my case the pain in the rear comes more from not remembering and messing
    it up again. :D

Easily? Easy until a users message is saved with the wrong permissions. I'm supposed to "chown" the server every time the system is used? I want my "Windoze" back! Ubuntu is crap! I just upgraded to 18. Now almost all my apps have permision problems. Ubuntu is crap. Maybe Linux is crap too?

Hmm, if messages are being saved by SBBS with the wrong permissions, then you have a big issue with how you're running the system. If it's something to do with an external editor, look into that as well. Only time one would normally get permissions issues is if you accidentally change something (like do an upgrade) as root, and forget to reset the ownership to the correct user.

If it's happening at some other time, you have a serious configuration issue. However, you would need to provide very specific information if we're to help fix it, like:

When do these errors occur? (i.e. what were you or a user doing at the time the trouble started?)

What files are affected? (exactly what files get the wrong permissions?)

    etc.

Anyway, I've never seen issues like this that weren't "self inflicted" in some way (and I've done that plenty of times! ;) ).

You must not have the sbbs user set up properly. in the [UNIX] section of
your sbbs.ini file, be sure that your User=<insert sbbs user here> and your Group=<the group sbbs user belongs to>. Also, I have umask=077. It works
    just fine.
