OK, what are people using for automated message bots? I'm looking to create one for Mystic. Also looking to create one for Synchronet, since one of the echoes I want a bot to post in isn't on the Mystic system.

At the moment I use MUTIL and post a text message function. The source of the .txt file varies based on software I'm using to create it but in the end it's
a batch file that runs the MUTIL function and uses a specific .ini for each .txt file and message base I want to post to.

I use MIS to run a timed event to start the .bat files

That will work for all but one of my bot posts (the other one has to be done from Synchronet). Now to find the docs for that function. :-)

That would work... or cron. :D

smbutil is what you need. Run it without options to see the list commands you can use with it.

i<file> I think is what you need in this case.

Yep, depends on what ever suits the sysop.

Thanks. Yes, I was referring to Mystic. I need to use both, because some echoes are only on Mystic, some are on SBBS, some are on both. :)

    Hi Tony,

This message (and one other) arrived twice. Both times the two messages that were sent also arrived with the same message ID. I expect folks like Al and Ricsi will have one of each of them in their dupe baskets.

You might want to check what's happening, and/or stay away from QWK until g00r00 gets back? Just a thought.

Pretty sure we (Mystic BBS) all use mutil's [PostTextFiles] function to do that. Most have them sending out a burst which usually results in the same MSGID for all the posts (each on different networks). Many systems call these dupes, but as g00r00 had pointed out, only MSGID is the same. Everything else is generally different in the header, so it's hard to say it's a total dupe.
I use two mutil .ini files to send the two posts I do weekly a second apart
to have unique MGSIDs and don't use MultiMail as rep packets post quickly
like the [PostTextFiles] does and so gets the same MSGID for most if not all the messages. Time appears to be the problem, anything that causes messages
to be sent out at the exact same time like [PostTextFiles] or QWK upload
group causes MSGID dupes with Mystic A31. Mystic handles this well, but some older systems don't and send them all to dupes, so I avoid causing them.

No probs, thanks. Seems that function is the go. The goal for v 0.2 of my hatching script is to incorporate optional announcements. The dupe/timing issue shouldn't be a problem for me, because my script only hatches one file at a time ATM, and runs mutil each time it is run. I'd have to add a second instance of mutil to post the announcement, but since it's only one post each time the script is run, duplicate MSGIDs shouldn't happen.
