• Displaying a text file in a menu.

From Weatherman@21:1/170 to All on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 16:34:00
Sorry for all the questions recently. I'm still a n00b when it comes to Mystic.

Was wondering if there is a way to display a text file from within the menus?

I have a one line ANSI live weather information that I have setup in my WWIV BBS, which basically just displays the text file after the main menu - prior
    to the selection prompt.

Was wondering if there is a way to do that in Mystic? I saw a few options
that I thought might work - like ANSI display file - but tried that option
with the "Data" of my entire path to the file and didn't see any output.

It's totally fine and most welcome :)

Yes. The ways I can think of, off the top of my head are:

Use the GD menu command to 'Display a file' and in your data field type in
the name of (let's say) a text file like test.txt

Then in your text directory, create this file and populate with text and
other MCI codes to clear the screen, pause at the end etc.

That will certainly allow you display something.

You can also use the GT commans to 'Display a line of text" then in your data line add something like |CL This is my line of text |CR | PA or similar

So is it you want to see the output of a single line of text below the menu options?

Many times, the text gets flashed on the screen, then the screen gets cleared by the menu. Did you put a pause (PA) MCI code at the bottom of the text
    file?

Hey Weatherman, maybe the menu item '|DT' (if I'm remembering right) can be useful to you, as it has been to me - 'display a line of text'. If you want
to attach directly a file, maybe you can try '|DF###' where '###' is the name of the file in TEXT folder. I've implemented lots of things with these cool functions.

Not sure how I missed that one. Will go back in the menu editor and check it out. I know the location of the single line text file, so I should be able
to use that option to display it after the main menu.

I tried the full path to the text file and then copied it to the text

    GD.

No sure what I'm missing here. It is a one line text file with pipe codes in it.

Sounds like it lacks a Pause pipePA as a last line of the screen or you can often add it as the next command with GT |PA
There are other methods of forcing a pause like reading input.

Since I have my own weather station, which is also live on the internet, I
have one of the programs create this one line text file. I edited the source code of WWIV to make it display before the prompt.

Trying to do the same thing in Mystic but have yet to get it to display the file after the main menu. No matter where I have the file. Might be missing something simple, but don't know what the is yet.

Find the last line in the menu you're looking to do this in and create a new menu entry, remove all the settings and in the hotkey section set it to linefeed

That creates a blank line in your menu layout

Then I think the answer you're looking for is to create a new entry on your menu after that - one that defaults to 'Q quit to main menu'

Then edit the display text line of the entry.

Assuming your text file is created in the Mystic text directory and the text
is formatted as a single line (with/without MCI codes)...

Edit that display line to |DFtextfilename.txt

Remove the hotkey and lightbar high/low stuff also remove the command from
    the menu below.

If this entry is the last on the list and you're just displaying native
mystic menu output then that will work for you.

If you want extra line spacing just add something like this

    |CR|CR|DFtextfilename.txt

    Hope that helps,

    Best, Paul

I haven't tried it yet but that's how I display my menu prompts. They are actually external files and I use the DF code to display them.

He, like me, was thinking it wasn't displaying because it flashed by too
quick. That doesn't sound like your problem. I don't have anything displaying right there at the moment, but might experiment to see how to do it. Right
now I have the rumors coming up on the top line right after the menu title,
so I should likely move them down to where you want to display stuff. So I
need to experiment and find how to do that myself too.
