• Cartel BBS now has SSH

From Distorted@21:2/102 to All on Thursday, March 02, 2017 23:04:00
I went ahead and built the library to allow Mystic to use SSH. I'm still not 100% sold.

At least in my term client, I have to do SSH the way I do it with
all normal SSH hosts. The username and password go in the client itself, not typed into the terminal. So that means users never get to see the login ANSI (provided I ever get around to putting a good one in).

The first time I used it, I was also disconnected from SSH after being idle only a very short time. So the jury is still out. Nevertheless, I'm making it available to anyone who wants to try it out. It's on cartelbbs.keeen.co / port 2022.

I wonder how a new user could possibly use SSH if credentials are required ahead of time. It might just be my client. I'll do more experimenting.

As soon as I sent this, I am starting to regret it. Not only did I get booted out of SSH again fairly quickly, it stopped accepting new SSH connections. I had to go to mis2 to even get SSH working, so now I've got 2 variables I'm trying to debug at the same time.

Has anyone else tried this? I'm inclined to kill SSH and go back to mis.

Nevermind. That worked terribly. I'm not sure if it's mis2 or SSH, but something wasn't right. After launching mis2, not only did I have lots of connection stability problems, but I also had several instances of mis (not mis2) that would be launched in parallel. That doesn't seem good. So I'm back to good old telnet and mis. Sorry for the spam.

I've run mis2 for ages and SSH works fine. mis2 is not as stable as mis, but a suitable looping script/batch file will look after that problem.

mis2 shouldn't affect the number of instances to mis running. I have independent scripts to run and maintain mis and mis2, so there's only ever 1 version of each at any time.

Same feelings here, bro. I was happy to finally use SSH too, and make this available to the users, but I've had more problems than pros. SSH in Mystic, via MIS2 experimental server process, for me works ONLY by accessing the BBS with SyncTERM - no way to use command line or other, only SyncTERM and I must say ConnectBot in Android smartphone. I'm using SSH just now, without
problems, but from WAN more than one user told me they had problems
connecting, etc. Must still figure the nature of the problems them self, port is NATted in the router, and MIS2 seems to crash sometime (but BASH scripting can help, with this) - work in progress.

ever 1 version of each at any time.

Me too, I'm using ad-hoc scripts for each of them - double exec of classic
MIS has never happened, so I think maybe this is another config problem in
    that particular case.

What platform are you running on? It's possible that MIS2 and SSH work better on Windows. I'm running Linux.

Can not say the same, has been working fine for me since I had set it up for both for ipv4 and ipv6 connections. I guess the question is do you support both or just the ipv4 connections?

    Cheers!

That should be fine. With Linux ipv6 makes it's own ipv4 setup so if you try
to enable both it conflicts. So if you setup ipv6 you can't setup an ipv4 as well because it will make them conflict and fail. Same would go for two
telnets (mis, mis2) on the same port (23), different ports is OK though.
So does Cartel BBS have SSH up on 2022? I know I found your system on port
    1022 (mine is 2222 ;)
Note: SSH has a time out, to shut it off (Really Keep Alive):
    # sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config
    # find the ClientAliveInterval (should already be there) and add: ClientAliveInterval 30
    TCPKeepALive yes
    ClientAliveCountMax 99999
#Then 'sudo serice ssh restart' and the changes get made.
That will stop you from timing out when sitting in nodespy or the like.

Thanks. I did not consider that I needed to go and manually disable the
normal mis stuff. That's probably a portion of my problem (maybe all of it?)

No, 1022 is something different. That isn't the BBS, so you won't be able to auth there. I will reenable 2022 and try disabling the other settings and do this again, but it will probably be tomorrow. It's getting pretty late here.

Only if you enable telnet using mis2. You can certainly run telnet from mis and only SSH from mis2 without any issues, if you want.

I don't know, but I don't really feel like turning ipv6 on is worth it. Clearly, there are some unresolved issues. When this version of Mystic
becomes a release version, I would expect those issues will likely be
    resolved.

Only reason I mentioned IPv6 is it's the only difference I can see between those of us with stable MIS2/SSH and you. I've had native IPv6 for years, so using MIS2 was a no brainer for me.

Clearly, there are some unresolved issues. When this version of Mystic becomes a release version, I would expect those issues will likely be resolved.

    That's generally the case. :)
