• Sorry for being away - Merry Xmas!

    Hey everyone!

Sorry I've been out of the loop for the last month or two. I've been snowed under with work, and when my network fell apart, I just didnt have the time
    to get it sorted out.

Between customer repairs and site visits, I've just not had the time.

The good news is that I found a little time, and decided "Stuff it, time to
fix this once and for all!"

Replaced my VDSL2 Modem with a brand spanking new DrayTek Vigor 130. It seriously puts the old Netcomm NF4V to shame. What was a very unreliable 10Mbps down and a shaky 1.5Mbps up, has become a rock solid 25Mbps down, and 3Mbps up.

Gone is the crappy old 10/100 WiFi router that was doing double duty
as a network switch. Replaces with a nice little 8 Port Gigabit unmanaged switch.

No more unreliable modem based portforwarding and firewalls. Replaced with a little Intel NUC, with 8Gb RAM and a nice little Dual Core CPU. Running NethServer, SIP, XMPP, SAMBA, NFS, PXE and other services. Copied over an Ubuntu 16.04 Desktop image and can live boot anywhere on the network now.
Also have a 16.04 Server image that can boot and deploy at the drop of a hat. Great for troubleshooting PC's.

CAT5e and CAT6 everywhere now, no more bottlenecks.

NAS is now on a load balanced dual Gigabit Ethernet.

Everything is looking hunky dory again. Well, all except my bank balance.
    Not QUITE so healthy...

I hope everyone is well, and I'll be trying to spend more time here as we
lead up to Xmas. I'm thinking about migrating my Mystic installation to the Gatewat NethServer (based on CentOS 6.5), just to simplify the whole thing,
and free up my RasPi for more fiddling around :)

    All the best everyone!

    Cheers!

Great! Now your up to or faster than most of us ;) I've had to sort out my network more than once and it has fast and slow paths in my 10/100/1000
setup. Now that that's sorted out time to play with some Pi's? Just got a couple of the Pi3's this weekend and setup RetroPie, Pi's are great as they
are low power (5Vx2.5A=12.5W max.) and run cool in general so good for long term running of Linux. Setup Kodi (set top box setup) on the RetroPie setup as well, found as usual I have to reboot after running Kodi, but that's normal
and one of the power button choices (reboot rather than just exit). Two Pis (power+unit+case) were just under $100 (US) as I already have a number of microSD cards.

...Really snowing now here in NH so the cars are 'Slip-sliding away'

I'm jelly! Pi3's here are damned expensive. For the price of a Pi3 here, I
    can get 3x Pi2's. :(

    Cheers!
