• Tips for customizing Mystic and Running a BBS?

From jordanjm@21:1/182 to All on Sunday, November 13, 2016 22:08:00
I'm running Mystic BBS on Linux.
I have a couple of questions:

How do I customize the login and log out screens? What editors should I
use for ansi art. I seem to be having issues with the art.

Finding the older Tradewars 2002 and Legend of the Red Dragons seem to be a little tricky. (DOS Versions)

I was thinking of trying to find a way to run a Legend of the Green Dragon
game as a door. Is there anyone who has attempted that before?

Finally does anyone have any tips for a first time sysop?

Thanks for all of the help.

I have watched many of the mystic man videos, I've read the mystic wiki, and the documentation in the docs directory.

I'm working on getting fidonet working,

What's out there that people think of as good in the way of games, nets, etc.

Kind of a double question on this one, to modify the actual menus you would type ./mystic -cfg and can do all type's of configurations from there. As
far as ANSi screens 2 applications come to mind but the better one for your system would be TheDraw since can run on DOSEMU.

Tradewars 2002 is still available from the author just have to buy a server license now vs the DOS license but he will provide once you get it.

You can find the author for Tradewars 2002 here:
    http://www.eisonline.com/

LORD is a bit more tricky but from what I understand can still get a valid license from the ones holding it @:
    http://www.gameport.com/bbs/lord.html

Gameport is very slow in response time just be aware of that.

Can not say I had tried to do that but will be trying to add this one to my
    web ui in the future.

Take your time and have fun with it, for some of us its taken some while to
get the look/feel we enjoy for the systems we run. :)

    Cheers!

That really just depends on what you are comfortable with. While I do have
some limited Linux knowledge everything I do for/with BBSes is usually DOS/Windows based. I still use Thedraw although I have been tpying with Pablodraw (Windows) just a little bit.

Finding the older Tradewars 2002 and Legend of the Red Dragons seem to

I have several versions of LoRD up for download as do several of the folks here. Also a ton of IGMs for Lord and Lord 2.

Dragon game as a door. Is there anyone who has attempted that before?

Far as I know Legend of the Green Dragon is web based. Would not be possible
to run it as a door but if you have a corresponding web page you could do it from there as an alternative.

Finally does anyone have any tips for a first time sysop?

It's easy for me to get caught up in five or six projects at a time. Much easier if you solve one problem at a time and then move on to the next.

On what, it's important. On x86 there are emulators that run the DOS doors.
On the Pi your better using Door Party and the like (external servers).

I have a couple of questions:
How do I customize the login and log out screens?

Logout is the easy one, text/logoff.ans Login is tougher, there's a
preuser, ans is a mixed file of mystic pipe codes and ANSI. It can be very tricky to edit I cheated with a hexeditor and hacked my changes in.

What editors should I use for ansi art. I seem to be having issues with
    the art.

Like I said above, it's a mix of ANSI & mystic pipe codes. You can make your own with ANSI editors. FSX_UTLS on any BBS that's had it for awhile has blockart_8b.zip (or all capitals same name) that has compiled versions for
most systems. Check the github if you need the Pi version.

Not sure about Green Dragon, again Pi??

Like all of us work on it, customize it, make is yours.

Door Party, bcrgames and the like external servers. Really needed on the Pi.
