• Latest Windows Update..

From Bucko@21:1/122 to All on Tuesday, July 03, 2018 22:08:31
Just want to throw a message out that the latest Windows Update (July 2018 released 7/3/2018) breaks Mystic.. What it did to me was it dropped one of my network shares, namely my message base. By doing that it doesn't allow you to log on because the path is incorrect. When changed to the original path c:\mystic\msgs it allows you to log on but keeps tossing something about a ghosting on node 1 and keeps doing it until you log off.. I am not the only
one who it broke their system, Carlos from I believe TwinkleBBS broke his system too. Luckily for both of us we have backups and we can get our boards and computers running again.. I tell ya with stupid issues like this, it
makes me wonder if running my board under windows is worth it. I am going to
be working on a Linux VM lab and will be running my board under a VM win32
bit in a week or so. I am wondering if it is worth keeping on Windows or
just go with Linux.. I wish I knew more about getting around Linux but I
don't and am just starting to play with what is probably the most simplest Linux out there Mint.. Oh well keep your eyes on the update and run backups
    of everything before you update...

Go with Linux. CentOS for servers. Ubuntu for workstation. Or Debian if
    You're advanced.

You cannot turn off the Updates. What do I do on my side is firewalling everything including the updates process.

Or You can go with some smallest AWS, Google or just any VPS.

The advanced scripting at your fingertips makes Linux a great fit for BBSing. :) Oh, and one way to really learn well. Just do it. My Linux start was back in 1995, when a friend and I setup a dialup Internet service. The only real choices were Linux or FreeBSD, and Linux was the one we went for. Definitely a crash course. :D

Hmm, a VM per BBS is waaaay overkill. Sure, if running 2 different OSs like Windows and Linux, it makes sense, but when using the same OS, just needs careful configuration of each BBS. I run 2 BBSs on the one Pi, eveen on the same ports (I use multiple IPs), with careful configuration. :)

From what I understand, Mystic is more or less Mystic, regardless of OS. The differences only come when you define pathnames and and run external programs (e.g. doors).
