• Update

From Vk3jed@21:1/109 to All on Monday, June 22, 2020 22:18:00
Well, has been a while since I posted an update on activities here. There has been a bit going on, in a few areas:

    1. Amateur radio. Upgrades that were initially inspired by COVID-19 have been continuing. I've integrated a couple of things to my existing EchoIRLP node/remote base, which had already become a glorisied wireless microphone.

First, I added SvxLink, another "voice services" system. While SvxLink offers Echolink, I didn't enable that, as it was redundant. Insteal, I'ce setup the SDR receiver (with 2 6m frequencies on the one SDR), as well as voting, multiple transmitters and Internet connected remote transceivers. At least one SvxLink "guru" wasn't sure what I was attempting was possible (it is, I'm doing it ;) ). Eventually, this will allow me to run a remote site as a hotspot, independent of the open VoIP networks.

Secondly, I've resurrected one of my AllStar nodes and have started on integrating it with the main system. First tests were on Friday, but due to some instability with the inter-system link, I am going to have to redesign things. I've also discovered that my old VKLink numbers still seem to be active, so I'll test that system too, as I still have it installed on a Pi.

    2. Sport. While there's no competition, and the recent clusters of COVID-19 look like ending any hope of getting a cross country season happening, I've been focused on next summer. With the Oceania Masters in January and me seriously considering taking up professional racing to get more race experience on grass (think meets like the Stawell Gift). One thing that becomes obvious is the need to level up. To that end, I have hired a specialise strength and conditioning coach who specialises in Masters athletes (AKA "us old farts" ;) ). I have a feeling this will make a difference. Stay tuned.

No, this doesn't mean I'll be running in the actual Stawell Gift - Age will still put me outside the range of available handicaps to be competitive. But it's likely I'll be running other races at the same meet - Masters or "restricted" (meaning for those who haven't won the prize money yet).

    3. Life. With the recent easing of restrictions, I have better access to some of my service providers (no more psychology by telehealth), which means I can get on with sorting some issues that stem from childhood. That's going to be an interesting trip.

So that's an update from me. :)

So that's an update from me. :)

Thanks for sharing this. I'm glad things are rolling along for you and that you're able to have fun with those hobbies. Best wishes to for the steps
you're taking to address stuff from earlier years.

I'm working on some nodelist updates tonight and have been fairly full on
with being a solo parent while my wife continues to deal with the affairs to sort out after her mums death. I think it could be something like 5-6 weeks before I see her again such is the stuff she needs to sort out. She's about
4 hours north of me by plane in a city towards the upper North Island so
until she flies home I wont see her :( Cell phones and Facetime are helping.

I started back in the office at work properly last week but have been having
a few days working from home each week as there are things I need to do to
help my daughter (getting her to polytech etc.) so for the next few weeks
until my wife is back working hours and home life is certainly different.

I'm also gearing up to apply for a new role within the team I work in and am just waiting for something to be advertised. When that hits I expect 3-5
weeks of full on effort to try and win the role so my time on BBS will suffer
a bit because of trying to focus on the job hunt and the changes at home for now.

    Best wishes to you

    Paul

Well, it's actually been a bit of a fruestrating year so far, with life being put on hold because of COVID-19, then financial issues, which have eased for now, still waiting on an inheritance. Seems any progress I make is through sheer persistence.

Not sure where the personal stuff is going to lead. I'm rather tricky to handle in that area.

    Hey

I've been plugging away at my Linux distribution based on KISS (https://k1ss.org) and have learned a few things.

    1. musl does not do locales. This is fine for me, but it means I'm stuck
with a 24 hour clock in mate. I've tried patching it, but haven't
figured out how to avoid the locale stuff.

    2. musl & glibc don't mix. This one was pretty obvious, but it didn't
dawn on me straight away that NVIDIA drivers are built against glibc.

    3. Dependencies are a pain. I've successfully built and installed mate
on my desktop, but getting it installed again on another computer is a challenge, because dependencies. KISS isn't spectacular at dependencies, especially when building multiple packages at once. It's even worse at dependencies when you don't list them in the build script.

I also just finished building GIMP, and will work on Inkscape next,
while at the same time trying to fix all my MATE packages and work out a
good order to build things in, and adding dependencies to things in the
core packages that the KISS author dislikes (like elogind, dbus etc)

It's a lot of fun doing something different, but it's been very time
consuming. Also several people have triggered a bug in magicka on the
mail menu, I'm not sure what, because I haven't managed to do it yet,
but have coredumps enabled now incase it happens again.

    anyway, hope everyone is well.

Well I didn't get the job I'd been chasing :( Meh.

Got told y/day at work, my general manager took me out for coffee and a
    letdown chat.

Working from home today and feeling a bit flat. I had hoped to shift roles within my current employer and the role I was going for certainly appealed.

Got to the interview round, they interviewed five, there were 25+ that
applied so I can take some solace that I got as far as I did.

Been doing some work on my low power FM station. Building a new box that will play the music as the current one is running a very old version of the
software and on an unsupported version of Linux. So that's keeping me busy.

Once that's done I plan to start to circle back around to BBSing again.

First day of spring here. Daffodils are blooming and there's some cherry blossom out also. It's still cold but the daylight is certainly getting
longer now. I think we hit daylight savings in about a month so not long really.

Got to the interview round, they interviewed five, there were 25+ that applied so I can take some solace that I got as far as I did.

My condolences. One of those annoying things -- even if you know you'd be
good at it, there's some objective measure that you'd be good at it, etc.,
but if you're not the lucky one that time, or you happened to apply into some group that had an obvious rockstar candidate, etc., it's almost the same as
if they said, "nope, you're not good enough" directly.

Which isn't fun. Even when the let-down messages are good. E.g., I applied
for a temp job at a hospital a couple months ago, and had the person I mostly talked with decide that I was _definitely_ the person she wanted, but the higher up I spoke with for two minutes (and who never wore a mask around me, but I digress) wanted a different skill set.

But then sometimes you get lucky -- like my upcoming job in Germany. I don't know who else would've hired me, but I was struggling with it. And they've
held it open for me, despite my start date being pushed back 7 months.

So here's to hoping that you have less the luck of your most recent search,
and more of one that gets you where you'd like to go.

But, eh, I also don't know if things change now that that particular position isn't an option.

Regardless, again, my condolences, and I hope you recover quickly from the setback.

Avon, I don't know you well - but just wanna say sorry that you didn't get
what you were looking for... remember that sometimes the paths our lives go
in come from places we didn't see at first glance. Your next big thing may be just around the bend, in a different way than you thought...

And second, I don't know all the heavy lifting that it takes to keep fsx running smoothly - but please, PLEASE know that we are all grateful and happy to have this message net... and you taking a break is NO BIG DEAL at all.

We're trying to keep everyone on topic... and not debating and such - but really, I think the community here is great and you deserve not to worry

Yeah, this reply session is really the first time I have done much at the BBS keyboard for a while. I got so focused on chasing the role I wanted and could not seem to expend other energies on different things. It seems to be a trait of mine. Do one thing rather extreme at a time. Wise words :) Yeah I've had to use my logical brain and let my emotional one know that it is what it is, the decision was not mine to make, that in the

But, eh, I also don't know if things change now that that particular position isn't an option.
Regardless, again, my condolences, and I hope you recover quickly from
    the setback.

Cheers ears... For now my current role in another discipline remains. I do
feel ready for a change having been doing this role for around 8 years now.
For me that's a long time. Given the Covid-19 dramas the world is facing I am sage enough to know I am lucky to be in work and will likely just try to find new/fun ways to keep doing what I am doing for now.

That said, I also think I will aim to keep learning and exploring areas of
the discipline I wanted to move back into. If I keep enjoying the learning
then it can be a signal to me to consider looking for further work opportunities in that career path.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to me.

Mmm it's 1 watt on 107.3 but from an elevated tx location. It covers a radius of approx 10km I guess. I also stream the audio online.

Yes! Not set on the graphics package just yet, but overall form factor looks good... Still researching the upgrade packages! Kind of pricey, I feel like I could probably do better... But this is the bad boy:

she wanted, but the higher up I spoke with for two minutes (and who

I went through a "bout" of unemployment a few years back, and it was
tough. Combining being laid off out of the blue from a job I'd worked
10 years at, to having to re-market myself, and then to deal with
overall horrendous recruiters - twice being strung along while the
candidate they wanted accepted their offer, once meeting with the
founder of the company for a cultural-fit interview and then getting
ghosted by the recruiter - to the point that I sent an email to the
hiring manager and the founder thanking them for their time and
consideration, and apologizing for the delay in sending the email,
because the recruiter hadn't responded to 4 emails and as many
    voicemails in 4 weeks.

My wife works in HR, and what she told me was golden. If the
recruiter calls you on a Friday to check in, you're on the short

I can relate. In my case I'd been made redundant from a job I loved and had
to walk past the new premises of my old employer quite often. They had just moved into new purpose built studios etc. so it was kinda sucky to watch and think what could have been. That said as time went on I realised I was better off out of the environment.

Got to the interview round, they interviewed five, there were 25+ that applied so I can take some solace that I got as far as I did.

My condolences. One of those annoying things -- even if you know you'd be good at it, there's some objective measure that you'd be good at it, etc., but if you're not the lucky one that time, or you happened to apply into som group that had an obvious rockstar candidate, etc., it's almost the same as if they said, "nope, you're not good enough" directly.

Which isn't fun. Even when the let-down messages are good. E.g., I applied for a temp job at a hospital a couple months ago, and had the person I mostl talked with decide that I was _definitely_ the person she wanted, but the higher up I spoke with for two minutes (and who never wore a mask around me, but I digress) wanted a different skill set.

But then sometimes you get lucky -- like my upcoming job in Germany. I don't know who else would've hired me, but I was struggling with it. And they've held it open for me, despite my start date being pushed back 7 months.

So here's to hoping that you have less the luck of your most recent search, and more of one that gets you where you'd like to go.

It is just a lottery. Really. You have to buy the right tickets to have a decent chance but the whole thing is very random.

It is like the short story market. You send one to a journal and it gets rejected. Three months later they publish one with the same characteristics. What makes theirs apt for publication and yours not are factors out of your control, like the mood of the people taking the candidates, the timing...

What was odd, was with the position I got, they took _forever_ at each stage. E.g., applied, heard back some time layer (e.g., at least two weeks, but I don't remember quite how long). Get the interview, and it's scheduled a month out.

Then an interview after that, and it was another month before they offered me.

But I was surprised every single time they went on to the next stage.

    Ouch.

I once had an in-person interview, where I never heard back. I'm not sure if
I did terribly, if the reasoning was something illegal, or something else entirely.

That one kinda mystified me. I figure by the point that I (and they) spend a full work day doing interviews, a longer rejection note is warranted. Much
less sending a rejection note at all.

Sorry to hear that... There could always be another opportunity that you aren't aware of yet that will work out better. Who knows, things happen and there isn't always a reason.

Years ago I had went through some major interviewing for a job with a major technology company. I was told if you make it through the first 5 interviews, you are good as gold. I made it all the way through all 10 interviews (yes, a total of 10 different people over the course of 3 weeks). Figured it was a done
deal only to have a last minute internal change in the company that ended up filling the position with an internal transfer.

Just wasn't meant to be and honestly, probably would have ended up hating the traveling aspect of it.

Yipes! Yeah I tend to agree. I'm having a mental holiday from the struggles
of work (for better or worse) over the coming week or so. Just playing in
areas I have sidelined for sometime to give myself something fun to do. I
think in the next few months or by the end of the first quarter of next year I'll be in a better headspace to look back and assess what took place and (hopefully) be better orientated in terms of what I'd like to try and do next in my current role or something else.

fair to say during these times of uncertainty with covid and impacts on economies it's a harder thing to judge what will be happening down the road a bit. I am grateful to have a lovely wife who is supportive of me and to be in my own home etc. It's easy to loose sight of stuff you can otherwise take for granted. If this has taught me anything so far it's to try to remember all
the good stuff that's been happening as well as anything else that may have gone a bit pear shaped.

Agreed. Although at the last few jobs I've worked, people never
    checked their mailboxes.

If anything, it's nice to have a pathway to the hiring manager
outside of communicating through a recruiter.
