    Hi all.

Experiencing issues with the fibre connection into our home. So NET 1 has
been impacted over the last 12 hours. Looks like some connectivity has been restored but am unsure how reliable and robust it will be. Usenet services, inter-bbs games etc. are also impacted.

The South Island of New Zealand has been taking a pounding with some significant storms causing flooding, slips and road links to be cut. The
lower South Island is essentially cut off from the rest of the island as
major roads on both east and west coasts are severed.

The telco I use (Spark) and other ISP's have been caught short with several fibre cuts also impacting multiple towns and cities in the lower South
Island. Some telcos using a different fibre connection I think are not
impacted but the one I use is :(

Once the dust settles it will be interesting to see what chatter arises
around the subject of resilience in our countries national
    telecommunications.

I have VoIP for my landline so along with the Internet that was gone burgers, and my cell which is with the same ISP lost voice and data about an hour
after the fibre dropped. So no comms... for about 12 hours.. only radio news
to listen to and my ham radio to chat with a few other locals via a 2meter repeater.

Where I live we have escaped the worst of any wild weather. Yesterday (my Saturday) was actually a nice fine, settled hot sunny day, today (Sun) has started OK also but thunder, hail and bad weather is forecast here around
noon. So we may cop some of it then. My wife is flying home today and back in to the airport here around 7pm tonight, flight gods willing... it should be
    an interesting day.

    Best, Paul

Was wondering if you use Spark. I noticed on their website they were going to have to wait until things dried out before they could attempt repairs. I'm
glad they were able to get you back online.

Nice to be here, I wonder how long it will last??

Yep, our national TV news tonight will be full of these stories no doubt.

Was wondering if you use Spark. I noticed on their website they were
going to have to wait until things dried out before they could attempt repairs. I'm glad they were able to get you back online.

They seems to have got some stuff restored (I'd say makeshift) now, but there could be some sharing of services with another big telco here (Vodaphone) to get the wheels turning again.

Once the dust settles it will be interesting to see what chatter aris around the subject of resilience in our countries national telecommunications.

    It could get interesting. :)

    Yep.

Yes, the whole resilience thing weighs somewhat heavily on my mind at present...

I really like the site geekzone.co.nz it's one I have been a member of for years. Lots of the guys working in the telco and IT space congregate there so updates of what is actually happening get posted there in a more technical fashion than anything the telcos put out on their websites and social
channels for the masses who are wondering why their binking lights are not blinking :)

    Here's the latest:

    [snip]

"Issue: Due to the extreme weather conditions overnight we experienced a
fibre outage on both the Eastern and Western core fibres in the South Island.

Update: Fibre technicians have restored all data services using spare fibres
on the Eastern route. Cell site restoration is continuing, with 157 sites restored of the 163 impacted. We expect the remaining 6 sites to be fully restored shortly.

The next stage of work is to repair the Western fibre, as soon as the area is accessible.

Please note until core fibre redundancy is restored there is a major risk to service, due to the current weather in the area and the physical access challenges that currently exist."

Yeah, they did seem to have spare fibre they could light up but still not
very comforting that a weather event could so easily knock out thousands of customers over a wide geographic area... home internet, cell towers, the lot.

If you're in NET 1 please read... and if not, well you're probably going to read this anyway :)

Guys, now that I have moved back to a new version of Mystic for tossing
duties you may want to check you are attached to the correct echomail and filebase areas you want a feed of.

I'm aware there may be some nodes who have turned on/off things in HPT for echomail bases over the last month ... and those changes will not have been reflected in the cut back to Mystic for tossing echomail.

Nodes in NET 1 currently have settings running for echomail and file bases as per 19/12/2019 (so a month ago today my time)... if you changed something since then at 1/100 you will want to conduct some areafix / filefix netmails to
1/100 to check on your echomail / file base feeds.

Just love that Windows 10 "habit" of not being able to shut off Windows
Update & rebooting. Been trying for years to figure out how to shut off
Windows 10 Update. What really gets my goat is using Handbrake to convert
files to HEVC & Windows HAS to be annoying enough to reboot itself no matter what's happening.

The worst part is the power company knew this was an issue. It was a coop
which prided itself on no rate increases for years. When they didn't replace any equipment...no wonder they were happy about this.
