• Doors on Linux

From eggy@21:4/143 to All on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 18:37:34
Hi.. I've been pondering of ways to expand my little BBS.. Sending messages on fsxNet is nice, however I'd like to do more.. Doors have came up here and there, but it seems like there isn't a good way to setup a lot of Doors on Linux. I'm wondering if I should consider setting up a Windows based BBS node for these various Doors in addition to my Linux node.

    Thoughts..

    Have you tried with Dosemu?

Doors work fine on Linux. If they are DOS doors, you should use
'dosemu' to run them. It's described on the Synchronet Wiki.

There are plenty of native linux doors and a whole world of dos doors to be explored via dosemu. I have a whole heap load of dos doors on my linux Mystic install running under dosemu and even run an InterBBS league with dosemu.
There are plenty of us on here who do so and can offer help if you need it.

Its seems a pain to do I guess. But for me I run my BBS on a Windows box (for now) largely because it just does seem easier to run the legacy doors I want
to and I am no expert at running some DOS emulation thingy on Linux.
Something that I perceive to be a bit hit and miss for some programs people
may wish to run under emulation.

The good news is once uoy've done it once its a lot easier for the rest of
theh doors in the tfuture. conceptoully there are some more hoops to jump throuhg and the barrier to entry (aka knowledge lvel) is higher but not too bad. imo easier than setting up msg metwork but i know my way aroundlinux well

Yeah fair call. Once I do dive in I'm sure I'll float... well I hope so! :)

Something to consider that worked for me when I tried to run the RPi Zero was running door servers like Door Party & such. Was the easiest thing I did to have it be successful at that.

I don't know doorparty and I might be suggesting something similar, but I suspect it would be easier to run some sort of native backend and have the linux bbs forward to it for games.

The biggest change from Windows is the redirector for the whole
server...rather than for individual games like I have it set up in Windows.
For that end...if you have the capacity...setting up an on-site game server with whatever OS you like would be another option for you.

Sounds like the same sort of thing.
