• Friday afternoon musings

From Avon@21:1/101 to All on Friday, November 19, 2021 16:30:36
Well amazingly it's Friday where I am again and the working day is almost done. I have had a fairly productive working week but not done as much on the BBS etc. as perhaps I would have liked or should have :)

I've found in the evenings after a full day in front of a screen I'm less motivated to sit for a further 2-3 hours to do BBS stuff etc. Probably to be expected I guess.

because I am working from home the same setting I work in is also where I do my hobby stuff and that I have found has also muted my time in front of the screen after hours.

In recent weeks I've been working in my spare time on understanding Docker and pestering Deon (NET 3 HUB admin and bloke of many talents) with questions about it.

I've also been fortunate to have some help from Xqtr on the Agency BBS mods that seem to have stopped working since I moved the BBS to Linux.

What I have learned during the time I have had the HUB and BBS on Linux is that I probably should not have set some things up the way I did or to be more specific I should not have mucked around with umask... as permissions issues continue to be a pain for me and the software I am trying to run.

A suggestion has been to start over and set up a new Linux install on a different box and copy files and settings I was to keep etc over then drop the new HDD into the old system when I am ready. I'm kinda leaning towards this even though I think it will end up with some head bashing on a metaphorical wall at times... I think it would be good for me to do so I can practice some of the stuff I learned the first time around, building software, setting up SSH stuff, etc etc.. still not 100% sure I want to do all of that again but you know what they say, practice makes perfect :)

I've been watching the over level of traffic in FSX as of late and it has dropped. It's always hard to know what drives what but like all things there are new things for people to enjoy and places to chat etc. I wonder at times if there are too many echos but have resisted the urge to prune or pair things back at this stage.

I'm not overly happy with htick and how I (mostly because I don't have the scripting skills) can just easily automate regular hatching of old files into file bases for old nodes. With Mystic I could have set something up there with a bit more ease.. I think.. I may be wrong.

There's other BBS software I'd like to set up and also more on decentralized communications platforms I'd like to play with.

We all need an extra 24 hours in a day eh? :)

Anywhoo I may go get a drink and I know I am on BBQ duty tonight as the family is coming for dinner... so I'd best sign off.

Hope you are doing OK where ever this finds you.

    Best, Paul

Well, I don't really think that's it. The only place I see any real
activity is meatlotions matrix channel. I think it's just quiet
everywhere. Having said that though, I had thought things were going
fairly well here. The last couple of days has been slow I suppose, but otherwise traffic here has been more than anywhere else.

Maybe there's more places I dont know off, but I don't think this lul is anything extraodinary, just the ups and downs of BBSing I guess.

As for echos, that's up to you, maybe there are too many, maybe not. I
don't think things would change if you pruned, it may even have the
opposite effect where people think that topic is no longer wanted.

I'm not overly happy with htick and how I (mostly because I don't have

Yeah, are you able to use mystic's tic hatcher with HPT? I would guess
so. Use whatever does the job and is most comfortable. I've been using

That sounds daunting. Though, I'm not sure I understand the issues - if

wrong permissions when you move it over?

Well amazingly it's Friday where I am again and the working day is almost done. I have had a fairly productive working week but not done as much on the BBS etc. as perhaps I would have liked or should have :)

    TGIF :)

Likewise, I've had a busy week (in fact a busy couple of weeks), where at the end of the day I've had no interest in BBSing.

I'm wanting to get Clearing Houz into a position where folks can self register and start putting my some direct traffic through it - there will be bugs and I'm hoping to find them all out this way. I keep saying I'm 95% there, but I find something else that I think would be useful or easier...

It probably doesnt help I've found some good TV to watch - first it was Goliath, then Accused and now I'm into Brokenwood Mysteries having started that last night. I've got 5 seasons on ABC so it looks ike it might keep me occupied for the next week or two.

In recent weeks I've been working in my spare time on understanding Docker and pestering Deon (NET 3 HUB admin and bloke of many talents) with questions about it.

    Go docker :)

What I have learned during the time I have had the HUB and BBS on Linux is that I probably should not have set some things up the way I did or to be more specific I should not have mucked around with umask... as permissions issues continue to be a
pain for me and the software I am trying to run.

If the umask thing is becoming a pain, I guess there are a couple of options for you:

    * Leave the BBS owned by the "bbs" and you "sudo" to the BBS user to do any bbs stuff.
    * Put the BBS inside docker, then you "docker exec" inside the container to do any BBS stuff.

Both these options mean that you can limit who can sudo and docker exec (which I know was one of your goals).

I've been watching the over level of traffic in FSX as of late and it has dropped. It's always hard to know what drives what but like all things there are new things for people to enjoy and places to chat etc. I wonder at times if there are too many
echos but have resisted the urge to prune or pair things back at this stage.

It has - as part of building clearing houz, I've got some graph stats (which eventually I want to convert to ANSI stats). Its currently holding around 100,000 messages from a few networks (including the 3000 (or was it 6?) from that rogue bot.) At some point I should think about purging, but wanted to use that data for some graphs and stats and stuff - so that you could definiatively see some trends.

I'm not overly happy with htick and how I (mostly because I don't have the scripting skills) can just easily automate regular hatching of old files into file bases for old nodes. With Mystic I could have set something up there with a bit more ease.. I
    think.. I may be wrong.

So "old nodes" can get stuff themselves by sending a filefix, or did you want to do something else. I've found it faily easy to hatch out stuff, but my long term goal is to move that stuff to clearing houz. What problems are you having?

There's other BBS software I'd like to set up and also more on decentralized communications platforms I'd like to play with.

    Yeah, me to.

I got some Lora devices (I got some pycom devices) - and while I set them up a couple of weeks ago, I havent progressed as far as I would like.

I was starting with the basics, have one device send a message over Lora to the gateway and then to the things network (which works well) - but I wanted to figure out the other way (a message from the things network making it to the device). I cant get that flowing, but then I've run out of time to figure it out. Hopefully soon :)

and that helped separate the two areas. One the weekends, I'd close the work laptop.

The security group disabled remote desktop, ostensibly because of an
exploit, but they've always wanted to do so. Now, I'm using Microsoft 365's web apps in Edge on my home PC. While it's been a nice exercise in using the web apps (and they've come a long way since Outlook Web Access) I miss
    having the separation.

couple of apps are running in containers.

I was disappointed there wasn't a next episode!

Brokenwood is good, as was 800 Words, a nice NZ drama that made me want to move to a small town on the coast. We binge watched the whole series, and they've apparently decided that it was enough. Good enough, since it ended

    Howdy,

Brokenwood is good, as was 800 Words, a nice NZ drama that made me want to move to a small town on the coast. We binge watched the whole series, and they've apparently decided that it was enough. Good enough, since it ended
    on a good note.

I was just about to correct you, that 800 words was an Aussie TV show - not wanting the Kiwi's to take credit for that (since they always seem to beat us at Rugby) - but then I see it actually was a joint Aussie/Kiwi production!

If you ever go to Auckland, at the airport there is a All Blacks shop, selling TV shirts at and stuff like that. I laughed the first time I went, when I saw a Tshirt - "I support the All Blacks and anybody playing Australia". :)

Just finished Manhunt with Martin Clune - I like him as an actor, he's done a few things since Doc Marti - that was a good crime show.

On the weekends I physically put the laptop away and clear the table I use for both work and play. But also on the weekends I have spent more time lately doing stuff outside and away from the desk I am writing this reply.

I think I'll likely try to build a new HDD and OS etc. and reinstall docker there... that said I'm not super motivated to do so, asides a perception that the system I did set up for my BBS and 1/100 HUB has some permissions issues that I can't put my finger on... so to do a re-do may be the way to go and strengthen my Linux learnings. :)

Both these options mean that you can limit who can sudo and docker exec (which I know was one of your goals).

I may yet do that after perhaps still leaning to a rebuild of a new HDD, I
can update Debian if I do that and revisit what I did to set up some things like SSH etc.. but yes I think I made an error in fiddling with umask.

My hunch is some stuff I was installing for python is not installed correctly nor will run right for the BBS now... Pain :)

It has - as part of building clearing houz, I've got some graph stats (which eventually I want to convert to ANSI stats). Its currently
holding around 100,000 messages from a few networks (including the 3000 (or was it 6?) from that rogue bot.) At some point I should think about purging, but wanted to use that data for some graphs and stats and stuff
    - so that you could definiatively see some trends.

I try to hold all the past messages for master stats and also if someone
wanted to get a rescan of it all then they could.. the graphing looks good.

So "old nodes" can get stuff themselves by sending a filefix, or did you want to do something else. I've found it faily easy to hatch out stuff, but my long term goal is to move that stuff to clearing houz. What problems are you having?

using a command line with Htick to re-hatch something I already have at 1/100 causes an issue whereby the tic is created but the accompanying file that should sit with it is (I can't recall this bit) not there or there in name
only and with a 0kb size. I do recall it seems to nuke the file already at 1/100 and turn that 0kb as well. It's as if by trying to overwrite or re-add
a file that already exists the proverbial wheels fall off.

When I hatch the nodelist and infopack each week my script has to delete the previous master file first from the file area Htick is tossing the file into
at 1/100 in order to avoid the above issues.

There's other BBS software I'd like to set up and also more on decentra communications platforms I'd like to play with.

No BBQ tonight it's raining and feels more like winter again...

Bad luck, BBQ sounds good.. got me hungry now hehe. We bought a little
mini bbq earlier this year so we could have a BBQ for my 40th, but we
never did (it was either too hot or too cold so we did something else). Wouldn't mind getting it out, but it's wet here too.

Apparently La Nina according to the weather broadcaster which apparently
means it's quiet wet here in queensland. Some places have had some
flooding, but I think mostly it's just warnings that flooding might occur.

I would guess La Nina might affect NZ too? Or maybe you're too far south
for it to have a significant effect? I don't know, they mainly talked
about Queensland and south america when explaining it on the weather
    forcast.

But may have a beer anyway :)

Sounds good. I discovered a new (to me) beer the other week, called
"Stubbie" it's an Australian beer, and cheaper than furpheys at the
bottlo so I gave it a go. It's not bad.

Ah well. Been attempting to get syncthing working between my computers,
so it will track changes and copy them to my back up drive. I've got too
many files for a cloud solution so keeping them on two computers /
seperate hard drives, is the best i can do.. but when i add files, on one computer, i have to remember to add them to the other. This should
    hopefully take care of it.

Well, enjoy whats left of your friday :)

I need to do this more also...

Bad luck, BBQ sounds good.. got me hungry now hehe. We bought a little

I cooked chops and cooked them too rare for my liking but everyone else loved them so there's that I guess :) Give me well done any day :)

mini bbq earlier this year so we could have a BBQ for my 40th, but we never did (it was either too hot or too cold so we did something else). Wouldn't mind getting it out, but it's wet here too.

Still raining here too... this is not summer as I remember it as a kid that's for sure :)

Apparently La Nina according to the weather broadcaster which apparently means it's quiet wet here in queensland. Some places have had some flooding, but I think mostly it's just warnings that flooding might
    occur.

I would guess La Nina might affect NZ too? Or maybe you're too far south for it to have a significant effect? I don't know, they mainly talked about Queensland and south america when explaining it on the weather forcast.

I'm sure it will I think it means drier than normal, so less rain fall for us... I'll let you know when my lawns go brown :)

Sounds good. I discovered a new (to me) beer the other week, called "Stubbie" it's an Australian beer, and cheaper than furpheys at the
bottlo so I gave it a go. It's not bad.

Stubbies to me makes me think of 70's shorts I wore as a kid :)

Ah well. Been attempting to get syncthing working between my computers,
so it will track changes and copy them to my back up drive. I've got too many files for a cloud solution so keeping them on two computers / seperate hard drives, is the best i can do.. but when i add files, on one computer, i have to remember to add them to the other. This should hopefully take care of it.

Good luck, I have been procrastinating on any computer or OS work in the last week.

Well, enjoy whats left of your friday :)

Thanks it was good and now Saturday just about flew by... !

Heh. My wife likes her steak well done.. I'm more of a medium-rare
person. I haven't had chops in years. I don't think she likes chops,
though I think there are some pork chops for me in the freezer (we got on
    mark down).

Still raining here too... this is not summer as I remember it as a kid that's for sure :)

Well it was supposed to be raining all week here.. it hasn't happened.

Yeah, where we are La Nina is wetter than normal, where as El Nino is
drier than normal. It has to do with the temp of the ocean apparently,
and when it's wetter here, it's drier in south america. I don't know
whether they call whats happening relative to localized situation, or if
La Nina can be wetter here and La Nina is drier in South America, or
whether, when it's La Nina here, it's El Nino there.

Stubbies to me makes me think of 70's shorts I wore as a kid :)

Same. Stubbies were short shorts here when I was in school. Stubby is
also a bottle of beer here.

Good luck, I have been procrastinating on any computer or OS work in

Thanks. I've been working on my OS the last few days.. I have been on /
off working on it since 2015.. mostly off lol. I had been working on the
intel ethernet driver the last two days, but failing to get it to work. I
think it must work, but the problem lies else where - possibly in my
    memory manager.

It's kind of frustrating, I've put so much work into this os (and learned
a lot along the way) but I think it might be time to retire it. I wish I
could get it running well enough to write a BBS for it, and at one point
I did have a working web server, but I think it's too full of bad old
    code to get anywhere.

So wondering what to work on next, Talisman is working and I'm not sure
what to add on that now. (actually I should do a release so everyone's up
to date) I could attempt a 64 bit OS (my old one is 32 bit) but I'm not
sure if I have it in me.

Thanks it was good and now Saturday just about flew by... !

It's a bit like that eh? Sundays over half way done now! Probably about
    dinner time there.

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, my 4 favorite (American) football teams were the San Francisco 49ers, the Oakland Raiders, and whoever was playing the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos,

And for Thanksgiving, I got to be the sole Raiders fan in a room full of Dallas Cowboys fans (all from Texas) watching their team get beat by the Raiders in overtime.

    That was a gift.
