• It's Getting Colder Here in Upstate NY

From MobbyG@21:1/219 to All on Monday, October 18, 2021 12:12:32
Well, the leves are falling off the tress, the tempeture is dropping steadily, and cider and cider donughts are in fashion. (So is Pumpkin Spice, but I am not a fan..)

I wish summer could have stuck around a little longer, but I don't think there is a way to change the gravitational constant of the universe and slow down the orbit of the Earth.

But I do love this time of year. I used to spend a lot more time on my Commodore 64 back in the day calling up BBSes and playing Space Empire and a bunch of others. I liked to call the time between September and April, BBS Season, as not much was going on except school. In April is when things started to turn to getting ready for the end of the school year and more time was being taken up by that. Review homework, etc..

Also, the AmiWest Amiga show in Sacramento, CA. held by the Sacramento Amiga User Group. They both start to make the pings of nostalgia start to go off more.

While I am not looking forward to snow falling, I do like the time of year. What about the rest of you? Anything about this time of year you like?

Yup, things are getting cooler here in Ontario as well. Last night we had a low of 5C (41F) and it was only 7C (~45F) when I left for work this morning.

I wish summer could have stuck around a little longer, but I don't think there is a way to change the gravitational constant of the universe and slow down the orbit of the Earth.

We went kayaking last Sunday the 10th, the weather called for a high of 14C (57F) but we actually reached 22C (~72F) with a humidex (feels like) of 29C (84F). Turned out to be a decent day to be out on the water, no such luck this weekend though.

But I do love this time of year. I used to spend a lot more time on my Commodore 64 back in the day calling up BBSes and playing Space Empire
    and a bunch of others.

I like to try and get as much outdoor time in as I can during the fall season. I try and get as many hikes in as I can or (in years past) visit a lot of the fall fairs we have around here. I'm not too sure if they're having them this year or not, if it isn't too crowded I may stop by one or two if they pop up.

While I am not looking forward to snow falling, I do like the time of year. What about the rest of you? Anything about this time of year you like?

I've never been a fan of the snow, though somewhere along the line I think I've begrudgingly accepted that no amount of me complaining about it will stop it from falling... ;)

I do have dreams of one day becoming a "snow bird" as we call them here, where one will go live in the warmer US states for the winter and then fly home for the summer.

Yeah I'm also in Upstate NY. After having a real warm first half of October the last few days have been cold enough for me to turn on my heat :(

This is a beautiful time of the year in Upstate NY. I really wanted to make it up to the Adirondacks this year but a root canal put a stop to that. :(

I love this time of year but the onlty bad thing is that you know what's coming nest.

I felt the same way. What's more, because of my involvement in school band, particularly marching and pep, I'd end up meeting a lot of other high school BBSers from my local-calling area. When our schools' sports teams would have games against each other, we BBSers who were also in the bands would plan to finally meet in-person.

I'm looking forward to cleaning the BBQ and starting to enjoy summer soon, but here it's still spring and the weather and temps are super changeable still :(

I'm not sure if I will spend more or less time on the BBS but I actually think I tend to be a year round user kinda guy :)

Work today (I am working from home still) was rather full on, had lots of balls to juggle and jobs to progress. Brain is a tad fried right now and I have a hankering for cold beer.

Nice to see your post in fsxNet and hope this finds you and yours keeping well.

    Best, Paul

We have dreams of living in our Ontario trailer park for 5 months, and in Arizona for 6 months in a trailer there. (The last month missing would be driving around visiting family and friends in Canada.)

Once my wifes health settles down and treatment is stable we are working
on finding jobs we can do from home so we can make that happen.

The cooler weather, I love the crisp feeling we get around here when the temperature drops a bit.

When the sun is lower in the sky, it misses my skylight. Video conferences
at midday make me look like a television interview with an anonymous source.

I'm still working from home, it'll be interesting to pay attention to the transition to standard time from here. I don't think I paid attention last fall.

My wife is keen to do a kitchen remodel but I think it will be another 12 months away. She's trying to sell some land that's part of an estate after her mum died. When that sells I expect she wants to do the remodel thing. I am hearing about plans most weeks as she daydreams :)

Of course it also depends on the make/model of your vehicle. My sister has
2 Ford Tauruses... they're both constantly breaking down and with the same thing over and over... yet my 2002 Lexus just keeps on going. Oil changes
when needed and other required maintenance things such as tires and I'm
    a happy camper.

I used to have a BMW 325is, that had some issues, but once fixed they

Engine replacement is usually a major red flag. I had one car years ago to which the engine blew. It was a manufacturer defect that the original owner failed to have fixed. I replaced the engine and sold it asap. My current car
is 2002 with just over 195K miles on it and rides very smoothly still.

The issues with mine all started when the radiator water bottle cracked. Over time the issues started to mount up and get
fixed. But unknown to us was the small water leak getting into cylinder four and in the end seizing up.

With the heat issues it was better to replace the engine, than try to fix issues at the time. That also means any future
    issues would be avoided.

The issues with mine all started when the radiator water bottle
cracked. Over time the issues started to mount up and get fixed. But unknown to us was the small water leak getting into cylinder four and
    in the end seizing up.

With the heat issues it was better to replace the engine, than try to
fix issues at the time. That also means any future issues would be avoided.

I can see where that would have triggered a major chain reaction! Water in
a cylinder means rust, which means ring damage, and so on. Sometimes you can get away with a good repair like that, but it's not that often from what I've seen.

I'm glad at least one of them moved to Georgia, so the chances of that happening again is next to zero.

Of course it also depends on the make/model of your vehicle. My sister
has 2 Ford Tauruses... they're both constantly breaking down and with
the same thing over and over... yet my 2002 Lexus just keeps on going.
Oil changes when needed and other required maintenance things such as tires and I'm a happy camper.

Toyota/Lexus with that 6 cylinder engine, reliable as all hell.

I had a 2002 Camry SE with the 6 cylinder, did the timing belt every 90K,
oil, brakes and tires - and that was it for over 15 years. Sold it with 200K on it, drove well.

I saw a video on YouTube where a couple of guys restored a Dodge "slant six" engine that had been sitting in a junk yard. Lots of water in the cylinders, but the process was entertaining and made me yearn for having a simple car with no electronics.

In the end they had to swap the block with another junker, but were able to take everything else and make a running engine out of it.

Absolutely! I've had extremely good luck with mine. I take it out on
the freeway now and again just to let it have a good run to clean itself
out as well. Seems to help.

I had a 2002 Camry SE with the 6 cylinder, did the timing belt every
90K, oil, brakes and tires - and that was it for over 15 years. Sold it with 200K on it, drove well.

I just did the tires and oil, need to do the front brakes soon. Back in the late 70's/early 80's we had an old school mechanic who did work in your yard and charged half the labor costs of a full garage... was an older canadian
gent and he'd constantly preach: change the oil every 3K miles! Oil to a car's engine is like blood to your body! Bad blood will kill you so think of what dirty oil is doing to your engine! His words helped me save the lifeline of quite a few vehicles even those with very poor ratings.

Wow... slant six! That was one of the engines back then that you really had
a hard time killing! I know many that drove over 300K miles. My grandmother
had an old 60's dart with a slant six... it rusted out but kept going!
