    I spent the afternoon yesterday resurrecting my company's legacy Windows
    2012 network; we may be needing it in the near future. It had beedn
    superseded in 2015 and shelved since then, I turned the VMs off in May of
    2020 when we moved and didn't have a need to bring it back.

    We're going to be spinning an office up as a standalone office, and I'm
    taking bids for setting up a new domain, but am curious to see if I can
    rename this domain and upgrade the servers to 2019 on my own.

    (I have 4 2012 licenses and CALs, wouldn't mind using them and saving some money in the process...)

    I have 3 GCs, one of them won't sync but the other two do. There's a step- by-step process to try and reconnect it, but I might just blow it away,
    create a new VM and join it to the domain instead.

    If it were me I'd just build from scratch rather than bringing the old stuff along with upgrade process, unless there was some particularly weird piece of software you don't have install media or support for.

    Particularly the domain. Renaming it or trying to migrate to a new forest will only bring heartache. It would take some seriously unique situation to get me the whack that hornets' nest.

    Yeah, might be fun to do as an experiment, *with* the new domain already in place. The only reason I'd rename/revive would be for cost reasons, and I think I figured a way around that hurdle yesterday.
