• Party game suggestions

From Adept@21:2/108 to All on Thursday, January 21, 2021 20:20:19
Does anyone have suggestions for online games that I could play with
    coworkers on a game night?

There are various constraints (e.g., I have to work with ZScaler, which expressly forbids various game sites, and it can't be something where people are required to purchase something. If _I_ purchase it, like JackBox, that'd
be fine.), but I figured this might be an interesting topic anyway, if people have opinions.

My personal favorite idea, which I'll have to self-host because of the aforementioned ZScaler issues, is Drawphone. Everyone writes down a word or phrase, then hands it off to the next person. In that second round, everyone draws a representation of the word or phrase they got, then passes that on.

From there it alternates between interpreting the drawing into words, and interpreting the words into a drawing, until everyone has touched an idea and hopefully the idea has changed into something entertaining.

I've played it in real life, but there's an online version that works quite well.

If you like boardgames, try boardgamearena.com - they have a growing collection of classic and modern board games that can be played in real-time, or turn-based, in a browser.

    Tabletopia.com is another good one.

This violates your ask, but Table Top Simulator on Steam ($20) is probably the best board game sim (it's cool because it includes a physics sandbox to create a realtime 3D table with each piece having weight, etc.).

And "Among Us" is still my favorite party game. You can play using the free apps, it's a blast. Kind of like Mafia or Wereworlf where everyone tries to find the imposter.

    Cheers,

I had an idea for games in mystic... did you know that linux / freebsd still has the old skool mudgames or BSD games. they would be a perfect fit for BBS env's. they are text based, and if you are running ubuntu, you should be able to install them with sudo apt install bsdgames. i have been thinking about creating doors in my BBS that would interact with the old BSD Mud Games. i think they might also have multi-player functions too....
another door i would like to create is one for Astrolog, which is a CLI astrology program that creates charts and also prints out other astro stats. :-)

    Thanks

I have thinking of something similar myself. In fact I wrote an article about setting a game service over telnet / ssh which
should hit the newstands this year.

If you plan to run such a server you might consider using NetBSD, since it has the most comprehensive collection of classic bsd
games. LÑinux distributions serve a reduced set of tehm due to license concerns, and FreeBSD does not pack the games anymore.
OpenBSD also has a reduced collection.

Right now I am porting the dgamelaunch game server to OpenBSD. Rogue V3 is confirmed to work for it, and Rogue Clone III
    compiles easily.

These sort of games are the type of thing that should live in a BBSLink-like service in my opinion, in order to keep score
    tables.

You may also be interested in ssh://rodney@rlgallery.org (password: yendor). They have a game server full of early roguelikes.
I don't agree with their Rogue V4 and Rogue V5 implementations, but the work they have put into establishing that service is
    impressive.

    Hallo gcubebuddy,

I had an idea for games in mystic...

This brings me back to my question for "game night games":

Which door games (besides the ones already provided by SynchroNet) are multi-node "live" games that could be added to a BBS?
I have dosemu running, so this is no problem :)

    Thank you!

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hi!
If i remember correctly i think LORD was mutli-player.
I will need to look up the MUD BSD games. i know they were originally from about the 1970's and used networks for "Multi User Dungen"...

here is a web link with a list of them: https://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/BSD_Games
    Hope this helps :-)
