    Hey All,

I've been using Pandora for years now. It's almost always playing while I'm working on the computers.

My question, is there any other similar service out there, that doesn't repeat songs so often? I've been trying to use the thumbs up and down, but it seems like I'm getting the same 10-12 songs. It's like listening to the local over the air radio stations...

Right now, Shepherd Of Fire - Avenged Sevenfold

I use spotify at times and I find it pretty good. SirusXM is also good although there is a cost. Livexlive and tidal also get good marks but I haven't used them.

I just checked them out, and the first two songs were ones I hadn't heard before. That was a pleasant surprise. :) So far I'm liking it!

Yup. That's how I know which MP3's I need to find... Um... I mean... burn off of the new CD I purchase... :)

    Thanks for the suggestion!

So far, it seems like there is a good selection on there. Some songs I know, others I hadn't heard before... Good mix. :)

I have used Spotify for 2 years this November. I have
produced a main Favourites playlist of about 1500 tunes since
then. Most of the time I play in shuffle mode - I like the
surprise of what will be next.

The service does a nice job of mixing them up. Although, I
seem to think it is playing the more recently added tunes a
bit more often than the ones I started to add two years ago.

That's not entirely a bad algorithm. I *would* prefer to hear
something I *just* added yesterday and hear it at least 3
    times during the week.

    It seems to do that.

Spotify also does a pretty good job with suggestions.

It is also a cool tool for finding covers of the same song.

Mad World -by- Pentatonix | Seal | Gregorian | Smash Into
Pieces | Michael Andrews (for the film Johnny Darko) ..for
    example.

Have You Seen The Rain -by- Sawyer Fredericks (nice and
    somber).

    All pretty fun to "discover".

    I don't remember how I discovered this:

Dodged a Bullet -by- Greg Laswell, but I like it too much.

Too bad there isn't a way that you could assign a 'weight' to each listing you have, and it would randomize based on that.

Are you adverse to paying a small fee for a great service? I travel a LOT for work, so for me its 100% worth it to have a music service... in all my investigation of them, there are two that lead that pack:

    Spotify
    Apple Music

I use Apple music, because I'm in that Apple ecosystem... but if I didn't, I'd use Spotify. The difference, that i can notice, is that instead of just giving you suggested playlists - which both of these services still do, they also allow you to cultivate and create your own collection of music. Long story short, you have access to all the music you could ever want.

    $10/mo.

    Apple if yer Apple,
    Spotify if yer everyone else.

In addition, the fact that all new releases come out on Apple music that I'd normally rush to buy ..It's not the sound quality of CD by any means, but great when I'm working on my yard, or near any blue tooth speaker, we spend just about any day above 50 degrees outdoors. I haven't used Spotify for years, so can't speak to it. I recall them or Pandora having commercials which I didn't like, and at the time the sound quality was horrid. I also am in the Apple "ecosystem" so streaming it through my airport express, to my speakers in the garage and/or outdoors is nice also.

Frankly I prefer owning music. I have a record collection. Maybe I'm just a dinosaur at this point but my personal opinion (which I don't share with my sister) is that artists should sell their art, and consumers should own the art, instead of treating it like a disposable stream that we don't care

    Spotify

The only thing I've noticed with Spotify, is due to my ad-blockers, when they play an ad, I end up having to reload the page and play my channel again.

I am loving the fact that you can pick the songs that you want in your playlist. On Pandora, they would just play songs 'similar' to what you're listening to. When you're listening to Slipknot, and the next song is Aretha Franklin... :/

I agree, in the same way that I believe that books and ebooks both have their place in the reading world.

There are just some things that a physical book manages to do that an ebook doesn't. The physical book itself can be an objet d'art, a tangible thing of beauty. Activity books of all sorts can't be replaced by ebooks or computer programs. Pop-up books certainly have their niche.

On the other hand, ebooks are convenient to have all in a handy device, not consuming so much physical space to store, with font size resizable to suit your viewing preference, and easily purchasable over the net.

For my music, I like having more options available to me, streaming, downloadable .mp3 or other format music, and on CD or vinyl. It's sad that music stores seem to be going the way of the dodo.

I need to get some, but I do have more Fire extinguishers than rooms. a
former company I worked for had them as part of the equipment list on
some field equipment. But we had to take them out for export. Instead
of restocking them, we were told to throw them out or take them home.

We had the fire service visit our home (a free service) and suggest locations
and help install the smoke alarms we had bought. It was a good move.

There one in every room and 1-2 in hallways at either end.

3-4 would cover my house just fine. I live in a smaller mobile home. It has some older, low voltage electric ones, but the need replaced.

Seems crazy they were going to throw out your extinguisher gear :(

It never did to me either. I understood not making an entire vehicle be classified as a hazardous shipment because of the extinguisher, but the could have easily been returned to inventory for other projects.

But I did manage to ensure my stepdaughter and mother in law had enough for their homes as well.

They do own the music part of it, sort of. They get little
bits of money for every play over the stream. Considering
that internet access is so broad and practically ubiquitous,
the # plays can add up. Plus there are licenses that radio,
public venues, and places like that pay - and a portion of
those go to the artist. They there are the ongoing royalties
    from copyright arrangements.

One song may not make an artist/writer set for life. So, they
    keep pumping out the tunes.

Even back in the thriving hardcopy album days, I think the
artist only pocketed roughly $1 per $20 album ..or something
    really small like that.

I like Spotify a lot. Their music discovery features are top tier. But I hate how they are constantly "dumbing down" their apps and removing features. Also their endless A+B testing is especially annoying. Two people in the same room can launch the app and have totally different experiences.
