Is Tchuss more common in German conversation now? My brief Intro German class I had way back when I was stationed in Germany said it was pretty common in the

To be honest I have no idea. But the major influence on what I use was one of the her Grandparents, from they Bayern. So even the odd extended member in Australia still has the same dialect going on. It has been commented before that the way I put the language together sounds/reads southern. I think thats as much because I'm doing conversion on the fly in mind.

When I was stationed in Germany, a large part of my unit were from Puerto Rico.
So I was as likely to hear Spanish as English or German daily. One of my friend's was on his second tour there. He had been stationed in Northern Germany in a town called Flensberg (sp?) and married a woman from there. She said she had a hard time understanding the locals in Schwaebisch Hall, where we
    were.

From my experience, the way Germans say "bye!" is "Ciao!".

But "tschuss" (with an umlaut) and "bis morgen" are fairly common. Maybe "auf wedersehen" very occasionally.

I've been thinking about it, and I believe that someone had told me that West Germany was more formal in their speech. I was there prior to and during Reunification, so things possibly changed with the younger generation.

I had an interaction tonight where the last word the clerk said was, "bitte".

To be fair, I'm not sure how much I hear that, but boy can it mean a lot of different things, and doesn't seem particularly formal.

But I'm _really_ not one to judge on the formality of how people are speaking.

Oh, side note on this -- I went to this place because it had a DHL counter,
as I wanted to get my vote out in the hopes that it'll arrive by election day (in my case, it doesn't have to -- it just has to be post-marked by election day, and arrive by November 20th), and despite it being a US ballot, people still talked to me in German rather than switching to English.

Which was fine, of course -- especially in this case, where I understood the questions, the number quoted for the cost, and so on.
