From Adept@21:2/108 to All on Friday, August 07, 2020 22:28:00
My personal exciting news is that I received a message from the local
German consulate that they're set to issue my visa -- so long as they get another letter from my prospective employer saying that they'd still like to have me there.

Which is pretty cool, and fairly unexpected (I have no idea what, if anything, changed, for them to move the process along). I knew it was a possibility, as
a month ago I had received a reply that said that I qualified for the Blue
Card visa, but couldn't currently go to the country because of the pandemic.

But it's fairly good timing for me, I think -- I'm now in an AirBnB an have been basically floating for a while, without much of an idea as to what I should do next for living situation, etc.

And my projects continue -- mostly I've been making daily ANSIs for a
calendar program, but have been occasionally poking at a couple of websites, and making progress on a drinking-game web app that I've been making for someone who actually drinks.

On the negative, my dad is now in the hospice stage of cancer treatment. He's no longer strong enough to do productive anti-cancer treatments, so it's been about keeping fluids up and doing what we can when he can. We have weekly family Zoom calls, and he lasts 40 or 50 minutes. It's unfortunate,
    especially during a pandemic.

On the more entertaining side, I have been having a fair amount of success
with making sourdough bread. Evidently it's hard to get a puffy loaf, but
I've made it three times and it's always looked kinda like a soccer ball.

But I'm more a baker by nature than a cook (bakers follow recipes until they know what's going on enough to make changes. Cooks make changes until they arrive at something they like.), and I know someone who has used my starter a couple of times (as in, most of the yeast in their starter were descendants
of yeast that were in my starter), and somehow always ended up with a flatter loaf. No idea on why, though they keep making tons of changes each time.

But now I'm in a different place, and I'm not at all certain on when/if I should be making more bread.

Thanks for sharing whats goin on with yet, April... the news of a german visa is pretty cool - I don't know your personal situation, but I would love the opportunity to live and earn in a different country. Sounds awesome- life changing- hip & fun. Hope it keeps going your way and doors that you want to
go thru keep opening. :P Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your parent... I went thru a rough time at the end with
my father, and can relate to the most basic feelings of helplessness, love
and sadness.. anyway, I'm sorry that this is the time in that journey thats changing. Godspeed to you and yours.

I don't know if there's ever a perfect time to go, but I'm probably less encumbered now than I've been in a long while, and more open to the idea of living elsewhere.

E.g., my cat died in January, and while I'm still sad about that, it's easier to fly, find places to live, etc., without a pet.

And I've moved so many times that my amount of stuff is tiny compared to what it was.

But it's a good opportunity for me, even if it had nothing to do with Germany. I've struggled with getting a junior developer job, and this job checks all
    the boxes.

We'll see once I get there, but I'm hopeful.

That's awesome good news. I've been hoping that somehow you'd be able to get some forward movement on that and it seems to be looking good. Great! :)

Well, it certainly sounds like an adventure in life. Way to adult! :P

    Hey there :)

Just a quick note from me - congrats :) This sounds super exciting. I hope
the rest of things line up for you as I know you've been wanting this job for ages and a chance to travel etc. They will be lucky to have you and your
    superb skills.

I'm fairly silent at present as work and family are full on right now but
just wanted to pop in to post this reply.

    Best wishes!

Thanks for the kind words. While I've had significant struggles _getting_ a job, generally doing jobs has worked out well for me. This does have an extra layer of scariness, though, given that it'll be my first "real" developer job.

Though who knows how much actual developing I'll do. Or how much German I'll
    be exposed to.

*Fingers crossed* that you get the promotion, and that family issues resolve
    as well as possible.

    Thanks for popping in.
