Could have been many different things. Maybe there was something in the competition's interview that made them laugh and feel at ease with the person. Maybe that person demonstrated a think-on-your-feet answer to something - and they liked that. Etc.. Etc..

I have interviewed a handful of people for work, and I can usually decide
who is a good fit for the shop or not after just 5 minutes or less. The people who say "Oh.. I love books so much! I could read all day" have automatically disqualified themselves! LOL
