• The Joys of Stick?

From Spectre@21:3/101 to Joy Stick on Tuesday, July 14, 2020 02:23:00
Some time back now, I trundled off to an auction out in the middle of nowhere which had the diseased estate of some dearly departed hoarder (read collector) of junk, (computers of alllll sorts).

I went in looking for some AppleII goodness but that quickly got beyond my means at the time. In the end I came home with a snaggletooth G4 Mac, which I've mumbled about using as a backup device recently. But its really about as handy as a boat anchor to me... Nope I don't have a boat either.

I also came home with a box of Joysticks. There was some 4-5 boxes of differing joysticks come and go, most early in the day and again out of my price range. But down the business end of the day, the last one came up and the deep pockets had all gone. So I snarfed it up.

All I was looking for really was one or two resistive style sticks so with a little jiggery pokery I could have one on the IIgs and CloneE. But of course most of them were digical ones. When I say most, thats about 25 digical to 2 analogue. In short I didn't really find much suitable for the IIs. A sidewinder.. nah looks really out of place, a couple of Coco sticks, one of which was near virginal, closer but not quite.

In the end, I figured I needed to recoup about $5 a stick to break even. So I banged them up at $10 a stick if someone wants to haggle, I'd still pass them out as low as breakeven of $5 but all is well anywhere in between. So away they went. And after sitting quietly for a bit they've started to move. The Coco's went as did a boxed speedking. Weird shaped thing it is. And all of a sudden a few more grabbed interest, and I'd have to say my $10 a stick while possibly a little underpriced for some of the better ones, seems to be a price the market will bear quite happily. So as it stands, probably most of the "sexy" ones are gone, and someones wanting to make a deal on all the left overs. Woot, more space in the unit and a spot of cash in the ol' sky rocket.

Two of the oddest things I've found in my box of goodies is the stick from a 3do. Anyone remeber them? They used to do the Might and Magic stuff amongst others and thought they'd have a crack at a console. It didn't do very well though. Never seen a console, but now I have a stick from one. And the other is some really strange thing from some kind of SONY system. A flat bodied thing with a little tiny stick on it, takes 3 AA batteries to power it up, no idea what it really belongs to, but looks like its IR.
