• Just a little test

    Hello All,

Just a quick test from a new Telegard BBS (not mine).

Telegard has one of the best message base interfaces in the BBS world.

I'm just about to go and see if I can find some ANSi messages and see what they look like.

... Now, witness the power of this fully OPERATIONAL tagline!

Mystic is pretty good too & I see a lot of similarities between it & Telegard.

Not surprising seeing as "Mystic was designed to be a spiritual successor to the Telegard and Renegade bulletin board systems." according to the Mystic Wikipedia page.

Probably why I feel so at home with Mystic. When I first (re-)started I instinctively pressed /* from the main menu and then # to edit menus which is exactly the same as Telegard.

I'm just about to go and see if I can find some ANSi messages and see
    what they look like.

Usually not great. Some of them are passable, though TG doesn't seem to
pause ansi messages for some reason.

How'd they look? I kind of expect ANSI messages to look entirely different depending on which system they're on.

If only we could get BBSs on a standard, but I know that ship sailed long ago.

I had a quick look but didn't see any. I should have simply switched to the FSX_BOT area, duh! I had to run but gonna head back for a little more in
    depth look around later on.

There are some ANSi messages that show up fine here on my MBSE BBS, and
others are messed up for some reason. I'm going to look into that and see if
I can figure out what the difference is.

It is. I ran Mystic for about a year around about 2016 and still have a
couple copies here that I toss mail to. The main focus of Mystic is the BBS experience although it also has mail/file tossing and a mailer.

Mystic's mail reader and editor are top shelf.

Not surprising seeing as "Mystic was designed to be a spiritual successor to the Telegard and Renegade bulletin board systems." according to the Mystic Wikipedia page.

Yep, very similar and Mystic is still moving forward.

Probably why I feel so at home with Mystic. When I first (re-)started I instinctively pressed /* from the main menu and then # to edit menus which is exactly the same as Telegard.

I ran Telegard for some time. Telegard was my last dial-up BBS and went down somewhere around 2000. I have fond memories.

I find here on my MBSE BBS that the BZ & BZ ANSi's look good and some others too, Leisure Time I think, and Family BBS ads look good. I'll see if I can figure out why that is and maybe we can pass some info to the ANSi artists among us who care about being as compatible as possible.

IF I post a message with ANSI in it, I go KISS :) Only use colour changes for blocks of text keep the line lengths looking normal, if I add colour to a particular line, I'll keep the text on the same line shorter. If I try adding the weather "icon" to the weather page it gets screwy.

Generally that will work in SuperBBS so I guess as a lowest common denominator it should work pretty much everywhere As soon as it starts to get complicated it starts to fall over.

Not that I was using Telegard, but back then I was using an IPX network and no amount of brute force, persuasion, shims or anything else would convince NetwareLite to run over crynwyr drivers. So there went my telnet setup, wasn't till hmmmmm probably 3-4 years later I was probably in a position where I could've made it work but of course it was all over by then.

Yeah, I think the only ANSI messages over the past month are so are the two I posted, as well as one from a file hatching by Avon that kinda blew up and didn't look right for anyone (but looks nice in the file area).

But good luck. Maybe by the time I get done with reading messages you'll have an update. :)

I agree. g00r00 was going to do something along those lines, either add
support in the editor or enable taglines with MPL perhaps. It's on the todo list so we may see something along those lines at some point.

Yup, my last BBS was a dialup Telegard board with 3 nodes. I seem to remember playing with telnet back then but I don't remember if I ever got it working.

I also tried to implement telnet support for my TG BBS. I got it working but
it was choppy something terrible so I never went ahead with it. I think I
was still on dial-up internet at the time.. ;)

Your TG BBS is working well over telnet.

Yep, yours also looked good pretty well everywhere.

Only use colour changes for blocks of text keep the line lengths looking normal, if I add colour to a particular line, I'll keep the text on the
same line shorter. If I try adding the weather "icon" to the weather
    page it gets screwy.

In the case of MBSE it draws the message header and then the message is
drawn below so if there are animations or anything you tend to get the
message body overwriting the header. That's the way MBSE works so I don't
think there is any getting around that.

Generally that will work in SuperBBS so I guess as a lowest common denominator it should work pretty much everywhere. As soon as it
starts to get complicated it starts to fall over.

Another thing I have been noticing with MBSE is that it wraps text sooner
than needed, somewhere around 76 characters so if the text going beyond that
to 79 characters it gets messed up.

I need to get a better idea about what is happening there. I might bring
that up with the MBSE developers and see if anything can be done about that
but I don't know if anything can or will change there.

That is one I had in mind. It may be there on nrbbs if I go back further I'm not sure. Can you post one or both of them again. I'm curious to see how it looks here on MBSE and on Telegard at Norther Realms.

But good luck. Maybe by the time I get done with reading messages you'll have an update. :)

My early thoughts are that animation might be problematic on some BBSs
although it looks good in Mystic and Synchronet. In Synchronet I have to
look at ANSi messages in the backscroll since they seem to fly by.

Also MBSE has trouble with messages with line lengths beyond around 76 characters. That might be something the MBSE developers can fix if they
choose. I'll try to get some good info for them.

*** Quoting Adept from a message to Al ***

    first the ancient Egyptian menu

In Mystic everything came out perfoect.

In Telegard, the text at the top of the message got mangeled, but was still readable. The Egyptian menu also got messed up, but the woman in the red
dress & the lightning bolt came out ok.

IceEdit made it almost imposible to quote anything from this message though.

All looks good at red-green.com's webby interface. No wrappings or broken lines. The full page continuous view of the .png is excellent for viewing ansi art.

The lighting bolt is very cool and flashy! <g> Very suitable for a

ah, I liked what LDA did -- I
had never really considered doing lightning inthat way
, so it was neat to have someone else's take on
it. Reminds me thatmaybe some day I
'll do a meteor storm, which is where I
    originally got thename idea from.
Anyway, I decided to try a file menu with it:

Weird! That sounds like the _text_ screwed things up, and then the ANSI got
    it straightened out eventually.

I do look forward to others' research on the topic that's been mentioned a

Yeah, it was too long, especially with the autogenerated stuff that pops up.
I thought it was 25 lines, but even that's too long to remain on screen.

So I took off the bottom part of the bolt, gaining a couple of lines, and that's enough that the "Files" remains on the screen, even if the top of the clouds don't.

But it's nice that my BBS is starting to look like a real BBS again, after
all this time. (By definition of "real" meaning "non-stock")

Yup, my last BBS was a dialup Telegard board with 3 nodes. I seem to remember playing with telnet back then but I don't remember if I ever
    got it working.

I'm back for another look. I love Telegard's message interface. I am on the linux terminal now with UTF-8 so I don't see the box drawing characters as expected but I could clear that up with Syncterm or Magiterm I think.

I came back to look at your ansi BBS add in the BBS_ADS area. It looks good here on Telegard and also on my MBSE BBS. It looks much the same in both
along with the more yes/no prompt. You need to put your 2323 port in the BBS add.. I forgot about that but I figured it out.. :)

... Hard work never killed anyone but why take a risk?

I can't quote you at all but this ansi looks quite good here on this BBS although it does mess with the header here and on my own MBSE BBS also. It
may be that screen clearing or something is causing that. If you can post an ansi without screen clearing or animation it might look better across different types of BBSs.

It got messed up on my MBSE BBS also because MBSE wraps test sooner than needed. I'm not sure there is anything anyone can do about that.

I thought about adding that to that ad, but since it's still very much stock I'll hold off until I put a little more fit & finish on it. Need to spruce that ad up anyway... ;)

That'd make sense, but unless something got in there unintentionally, none of the three ANSIs I posted had screen clearing codes or animation.

Yeah, I'm guessing that's the bigger issue. And there's probably _some_ way around it that Mystic at least kind of likes, but when I attempted to post a 79-column-wide ANSI, Mystic just started the next line sooner.

But there are probably ways around that, if I were to spend a bit more time figuring it out.
