• Gert's systems?

    From Nigel Reed@21:2/101 to FSXNET.FSX_GEN on Thursday, July 02, 2020 03:28:07
A little off topic but I know many sysops here are connected
to Gert's networks too. I've not been able to connect for a
day or so and not got a response to my email. Does anyone
have any insight into what's going on with him or his
    systems?

    Thanks,
    Nigel

I was connected to a couple of Gert's nets at one time but they seem to
be quiet and contacting Gert works sometime and not others.

It didn't seem worth it to me since the nets seemed to be so quiet so I
just let them go. I think in those nets if you hang around you need a lot
    of patience.. :)

    That is very true.

Anyway, I finally heard back from Gert. Some sort of linux issue...

Yep, that is a problem. Even if you did hear back it could still be a
    problem. ;)

Gert is running quite a few nets that he has taken over from others and I'm
not sure how well all that works. It would probably be better if Gert just
ran his own net properly instead of trying to maintain all those old nets
that were let go by the folks who started them.

It's a worthy endeavor but it must be hard to make sure all those zones, regions and nets are all doing the right thing single handed.

Like Al, I used to be on a few of the nets hosted by Gert - linuxnet, sysoptechnet IIRC - but there was zero posts there for the time I was on (10-12
    months or so).

So Ive abandoned them as well.. (I think there are more than enough nets in existance now, and I think many of use are in many of them... !)

Maybe he should just merge them all into one network?

It would be easier for him to do that. I don't know the numbers he is
working with but that might be a good workable solution.

He may not want to do that and I can understand that too. Some of those nets thrived at one time, PascalNet and SysopsTechnet at least so he may be trying/hoping to keep it all together. I don't know how successful he can be but maybe it is worth a try.

JustaNet comes to mind also. I was their in the heydays. That was a great
net back then. I don't know what is happening there today.

Here in fsxNet we seem to have the best of all worlds.

I'm probably a member of all of them. I think the main problem is that there are too few users to go around. They see nothing posted so don't leave any messages and it's a vicious circle of decay. Personally, I would love to see him throw them all out and merge the popular groups into one network. People would see activity and partake, at least that'd be the hope.

I wonder how Gert would feel about that? You should ask him if he has
thought of doing that. It would save him (and us) all those nodelists, dailylists, nodediffs and pointlists.. ;)

    Oh I agree Al

Running four or five zones and then keeping up with adding nodes and drop
soon dead nodes. In just one network is enough then thinking 4 or more nets?
