Mesoscale Discussion 0184
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0828 PM CDT Tue Mar 12 2019
Areas affected...Extreme southeast NM and Southwest TX
Concerning...Tornado Watch 17...
Valid 130128Z - 130330Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 17 continues.
SUMMARY...Broken line of intense thunderstorms will continue to
track across the discussion area, along with an isolated supercell
ahead of the line. All modes of severe weather are possible.
DISCUSSION...The primary squall line currently extends from northern
Presidio county TX northward into Lea county NM. Several embedded
bow/lewp structures along this line are capable of locally damaging
wind gusts and large hail. The storms in Lea county are where the
line intersects the warm front, and continue to show the most
pronounced bowing/rotational characteristics.
One discrete supercell has formed ahead of the line and is tracking
toward Wink, TX. Given the low level shear and sufficient
instability in place, this storm will hold some potential for a
tornado and very large hail until it is absorbed into the main line
in the next hour.
