    Mesoscale Discussion 0115
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
    0909 AM CST Wed Feb 20 2019

    Areas affected...Eastern Minnesota...Northern Wisconsin...Western
    Upper Michigan

    Concerning...Heavy snow

    Valid 201509Z - 202115Z

SUMMARY...Heavy snowfall is expected to develop over parts of
eastern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and western Upper Michigan
late this morning into early afternoon. Snowfall rates of up to 1
inch per hour will be possible in the heaviest bands.

DISCUSSION...The latest water vapor imagery shows a
negatively-titled upper-level trough moving northeastward across the
Upper Midwest this morning. A deformation zone has already set up
across parts of southern Minnesota with a band of moderate to
locally heavy snow located from southeast Minnesota into western
Wisconsin. Large-scale ascent is being enhanced along this corridor
by the left exit region of a 90 to 110 kt mid-level jet. Also, a 40
to 60 kt low-level jet is currently analyzed by the RAP just to the
south of this east to west band which is contributing to strong lift
in the region. The low-level jet is forecast to move
north-northeastward across Wisconsin late this morning which will
help to enhance snowfall rates across eastern Minnesota, northern
Wisconsin and western Upper Michigan from late morning into early
afternoon. Snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour will be possible within
the heaviest portion of the bands. The greatest potential for heavy
snow over the next 3 to 6 hours will be along the I-35 corridor from Minneapolis to Duluth.
