    Mesoscale Discussion 0055
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
    0144 PM CST Sun Jan 27 2019

    Areas affected...Southern North Dakota...Northeastern South Dakota...Southwestern Minnesota

    Concerning...Heavy snow

    Valid 271944Z - 280145Z

SUMMARY...Locally heavy snowfall is expected to develop from
southern North Dakota into northeastern South Dakota and southwest
Minnesota late this afternoon into the early evening. Snowfall rates
of up to 1 inch per hour will be possible.

DISCUSSION...The latest surface analysis shows a 994 mb low over far
southeast Saskatchewan. The surface low is associated with a
shortwave trough currently near the U.S. and Canadian border. These
features will move southeastward across central North Dakota late
this afternoon. Southeasterly flow will increase along and to the
east of the surface low track. In response to these features,
isentropic lift will become enhanced resulting in increased snowfall
rates. The latest HRRR looks reasonable and suggests that a band of
heavy snow will develop in southern North Dakota after 21Z. This
band is forecast to spread southeastward across northeastern South
Dakota late this afternoon. Southwestern Minnesota may be affected
after 00Z/Monday. The heaviest portions of the band could have
snowfall rates of up to an inch per hour.
