    Mesoscale Discussion 0020
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
    1107 AM CST Fri Jan 18 2019

    Areas affected...Eastern South Dakota...Southern Minnesota...and
    northern Iowa.

    Concerning...Heavy snow

    Valid 181707Z - 182000Z

SUMMARY...A band of moderate to heavy snow has developed from
Mitchell, SD to northeast Iowa with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches
per hour. High snow to liquid ratios may lead to accumulation rates
in excess of 2 inches per hour under the heaviest bands.

DISCUSSION...A frontogenesis band continues to strengthen across
eastern South Dakota, southern Minnesota, and northern Iowa. This
band will slowly move east through the afternoon, but is likely near
peak intensity at this time. A dendritic growth zone extending from
the surface to around 15 kft based on RAP soundings will foster high
snow to liquid ratios likely in excess of 20:1 in the heaviest snow
bands. While the movement of this band will limit the total
accumulations in some locations, there does appear to be a narrow
swath a county or two wide which will stay under the heaviest
snowfall rates for an extended period and may outperform
expectations. The likely area with these locally higher amounts will
be in the southern tier of counties in Minnesota west of I-35.
