    Mesoscale Discussion 1343
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
    0357 PM CDT Wed Aug 22 2018

Areas affected...Northern and central UT...southeast ID into
    southwest WY

    Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 347...

    Valid 222057Z - 222230Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 347
    continues.

SUMMARY...Severe thunderstorms will continue across northern Utah
through the afternoon, with an additional increase in storms
expected across southeast Idaho through late afternoon. Severe
hail/wind remain possible across the region and Severe thunderstorm
Watch 347 continues until 9pm MDT.

    DISCUSSION...Across Utah, semi-repetitive eastward-moving
storms/supercells with a history of producing multiple instances of
large hail will continue to impact parts of the Wasatch Front as
storms continue to regenerate around the southern Great Salt Lake
and move eastward. The Salt-Lake City 88D VAD wind profile continues
to sample very strong winds near/above 3km (45-50 kt common between
3-6km), which are favorable for supercells given a very moist and
relatively unstable environment, with latest SPC Mesoanalysis
supportive of nearly 1000 J/kg MLCAPE across much of
    northern/central Utah.

Farther north, a belt of ascent, implied by water vapor imagery,
appears the shifting northeastward toward southern Idaho/far
northern Utah. This ascent, along with a gradually destabilizing air
mass in the wake of early-day storms, should lead to an increase in
some strong to severe thunderstorms across southeast Idaho/far
northern Utah over the next several hours.
