Kleenex is a popular brand here in the states... it is just a throwaway cardboard box that holds the tissues which are mainly used to blow one's nose into and then be thrown away...

What is a "tissue box"? ;)

I believe it is a box that one keeps facial tissue (also known in the US by
a brand name, "kleenex") in. The author mentions that it is full of
cushions. That would make me think he was referencing the softness of the inside of a box full of facial tissue... very soft and cushioned on the
inside.
