The Senator Lounge in this terminal was closed for
renovations, so I got sent to some undersized,
undercatered room at the other end of the terminal,
where there were no seats available, that's no, so I
propped my computer up at the newspaper stand and
amused myself for an hour, helpsed by a modest pour
of Calvados.
And so to the gate, which was a modest hike. I didn't
exercise my cut-the-line privilege like some others
but stood at almost the end of the line; it didn't
matter, we were at a bus gate anyway.
Another uneventful flight of about half an hour,
during which we were offered a small snack, which I
declined, and a piece of chocolate, which I accepted.
Other than the subway ticket kiosks being hard to
read in the sunlight, it was easy and quick to get
downtown, where I'd booked at the Hampton Nuremberg.
of which I am fond. Lilli was already there and had
checked us in, and we went up to our fairly nice
room for a much-needed shower and rest before our
meeting at Le Meridien Atelier bar, where of course
beer was the order of the day except for Lilli's
red plonk. After which the traditional procession to
Barfusser, that Franconian/Bavarian icon that is
rumored to be closing within a year, the proprietors
tired of the job and set to retire.
Lilli and I split a Schweinshaxe, which oddly got a nod
of approval from the waiter, who actively discouraged
the four people near us from ordering a platter for
four (they did anyway and ate half or less). The Haxe
was its usual porky delicious self, perhaps a bit less
tender-crispy outside and more hard than before;
instead of the infamous Kloess, Lilli asked for French
fries, which request was cheerfully fulfilled. Dark
beer for me, red plonk for her.
Being oldsters, we begged off the afterparty and went
back home for a well-deserved snooze.
Next morning we slept in, passing up a couple of tours
that had been arranged for the group. Instead, we went
to the Franconian Beer Festival, where we spent all
day rather than the hour allotted for the tourists.
Though our beloved suckling pig stall is long gone, we
spotted a place selling Bauch, so I asked for one. What
I got was something else altogether, a grilled pork cutlet
brushed with Maggi. It tasted pretty decent, was a buck
less than the pork belly, and so that was fine enough.
Two breweries of note.
The Brauerei Held, about 40 miles from town, had some
interesting offers, including a light but highish-alcohol
Festbier that is usually brewed for Christmastime, but of
which they made a special batch for this occasion. Also
a pretty standard, malty, sweetish, delicious Dunkel. I
think this is my preferred place.
Neder, from closer to town, brought a Braun and a
Schwarz, both richer than a normal Pilsner, and which I
liked pretty well. One oddity is that they were charging
E10 deposit on their very ordinary mugs, as opposed to
the 2 to 5 most places got.
