I'm still not going to go out mushroom hunting, but will accept them from people I know that know their mushrooms. We get some on an irregular basis from one of the farmer's market vendors--she was the
one > that IDed the Lion's Mane one for us last year.
Which if were a tad commoner could have made the
    foolproof five.
The tree that had the one we found last year isn't growing one this
year. Guess we'll have to look for another one. (G)

Mushrooms tend to grow in stands. Look for
little teeth peeking up among the moss and
then come back a year or two later.

Though a lot of mushroom hounds tell you to
use an open-weave basket or a mesh bag to put
your haul in so you can let the spores fall out
the bottom, propagation is pretty chancy even if
you take care and an effort.
True, we were told it might not "take" but it was worth a try.

Mycology is a young science, and fungiculture
has been hit-or-miss except for the buttons and
the other common (if expensive) species you see
    in the store.

Valsartan was touted as the best of the best, except,
as it turns out, for the small issue of industrial
    contaminants causing cancer.
Picked up the mail from while we were gone, included a number of
meds, > including valsartan. So far, so good.
Enjoy ye diovans while ye may.
    I do. (G)

I wonder about the incidence of cancers that was
caused by the valsartan that prevented a large number
of heart attacks. As far as I can see, if the danger
is less than 1:1, the recall was unjustified, and
what should have done (and in the first place too)
is to tighten up the manufacturing processes.

I figured you'd not be tempted by peanut
    butter crackers.
No, but Steve might be. (G)
Let him speak for himself. Speaking of which,
he hasn't appeared here very much lately.
He's been busy with other projects. Now that the major trips for the
year are basically done and we won't be on the road that much, maybe he
will get back to Fido. Always something to do around the house (He made sourdough bread today.) but I'm sure he will be spending more time at
    the computer.

Not that I advocate having it take over one's
life the way we see it happening among kids. But
we're not that bad, are we.

Doing a Gedanken, if I were in charge of, say, Kevin,
I'd be seeking all the solace from the Internet I could.
Very understandable, especially in the light of what I know about
Kevin, > including the most recent updates you wrote about.
Oh, he's a mean old coot. Weighs a lot, too.
    Sounds about normal.

It was a major pain and took two grown men
(admittedly one of them was small slim Glen)
to right him after he fell over.

Not likely - if it had been compellingly wonderful,
it would have happened long since.
Just one of those less than happy memories instead.
Not much of a memory at all, truth be told.
Back of the mind, dredged up when something tickled the spot?
    Not even that.
OK, some spot beyond remote corners of the mind. (G)

There haave been times when the world has interesting
things going on that take precedence over even here.
True, and other times this is a good escape from what's going on in
    the > world.
A happy recipe follows, if I can find one.
Rice pudding with cinnamon sugar (Milchreis mit Zimtzucker)
    categories: Westphalian, German, dessert
    servings: 4
That is always good, tho it's high carb. I'll make one with Stevia for
half the sugar and almond "milk" to reduce the carb count a bit. That'll
give me a bit of "wiggle room" to add raisins.

I said happy recipe, not healthy recipe.
This makes enough to happify 4 Germans or
    6 normal people.

    Fried potatoes (Bratkartoffeln)
    categories: Westphalian, German,
    servings: 4

    1 kg potatoes
    2 onions
    100 ml oil
    salt
    black pepper

Peel the potatoes, wash them and slice thin. If the
slices are too thick, the potatoes won't get tender
in the pan, because they are not cooked before frying.

Heat the oil in a large pan. Cook the potatoes briefly.
Add the minced onions and fry for about 25 min, until
the potatoes start getting soft. Season well.

    Hi Michael,

Mushrooms tend to grow in stands. Look for
little teeth peeking up among the moss and

This one grows on trees. OTOH, we had a lot of moss in our front yard up
until recently, but no mushrooms. Had some trees taken out or trimmed,
opening up to a lot more light. Now we actually have some grass growing
in spots where it didn't grow before for lack of light. Steve has also
been building up the soil with compost in that, and other bare areas.

your haul in so you can let the spores fall out
the bottom, propagation is pretty chancy even if
you take care and an effort.

I don't try to grow them; it's a job left best to those with some
    experience in the field.

projects on the sewing machine. Did some fancy cooking last week--took
the lamb shanks recipe we usually use and cooked a butterflied, boneless
leg of lamb the same way. Also made a pumpkin roll for Steve's birthday.

My mom wasn't that big but in their later years, Dad couldn't righten
her after some of her falls either. He was a bit below average build and
had lost strength as he aged so to get Mom up, he called either my

    2 onions
    100 ml oil

That is a lot of potatoes. I used to figure one average potato per
person when the girls were home, Steve was doing PT and I could eat all
the carbs I wanted. Now, if I fry them, I'll figure a couple of small
potatoes for the 2 of us, or one large. Steve is not doing PT, I'm
watching carbs and the girls are out of the house. Also Steve has cut
back on potaotes, tomatoes and other nightshade associated plant foods
because they make his arthritis flare up.

    Hi Nancy,

Steve was looking at fleece fabric while I was getting the
flannels--thought some would be good for baby quilts. I told him
that I prefer to work with just the flannels, and, much as I'd
like to get some fleece for other projects, I'll hold off for
now. NB>> You don't want to pile up too much fabric.... ;)

A room can only hold so much at one time, after all.... ;)

I still have room to get to where I need to for sewing, pressing,
    cutting, etc.

Taste is more important anyway... ;) Good that you are eating
    down the freezer stash... :)
Trying to, anyway. Steve got a (half) crock of cabbage working
for eventual sauerkraut the other day. That, when done, will be
    kept in the fridge.
And you'll have fresh sauerkraut... :)

Yes, to add to the winter's eating. I got more cabbage and made cole
slaw the other day. After trying it at the one local restaurant and finding it (in our opinions) inedible, we wanted some that we knew
    would be good--and it is.

Always a good thing when you can fix your own... and be able to enjoy
it over what you find when out....

Yes, and this has been our standard for cole slaw for years. Steve's mom
gave me the recipe--it's basic, but good.

    Hi Nancy,

getting a new fridge delivered next month. Old one is ok, but
small, so will take it over to the church house. Sorting/
stocking the new one should take only a day.
New fridge arriving in January...? or December....?

December, Monday the 10th. Sorry, time/date of when I wrote/it was
posted and not fully "with it" with the bronchitis.

Understood... and I saw the date when I started into the next batch of messages.... so realized your brain hadn't "flipped the calendar page"
    so to speak.... :)

I usually write one day, upload the next.

You'll be putting the contents of the old into coolers and such
in the interim (even if it's all happening on the same day)...?

    That's the plan.

    That works.. :)

Cold enough to just put it outside tho, may do that. (G)

I don't think any of it lasted over the weekend... even on the
ski slopes... they'll have to start over... ;)

At least it's cold enough for them to make snow.

True... :) And as it gets colder, the snow will be lighter and more powdery.... :)

    The fun stuff.

Yes, I might splurge and make pizza for supper some time this
    week.
Just pile it high with veggies and protein... ;)
Made a couple of mini ones usuing the bazlama bread for the
crusts. Also used a meat sauce I pulled from the freezer, topped
with pepperoni from Olindo's and mozzarella cheese.
    Nice. :)

It tasted good too. We had a salad with it so I only had 2 pieces of
pizza (about half of a 9" plate). Had the other 2 for lunch the next
    day.

    Worked out well... :)

Quite, easy on the carbs for me, with a good amount of protein to
    balance them out.

Nice when one can just drive and the snow just blows off the car in
    the first few minutes... ;)

Also can be quite dangerous when people do that. If light and powdery,
it has the possibility of blinding cars behind. If more crusty, it has
a strong possibility of letting loose as a block that can cause the car
behind to panic. Much better to clear the car before starting out in
    every case.

I wasn't talking about quantities of snow... just a dusting of the light powdery stuff.... the sort that is gone before getting anywhere near the highspeed roads....

If more crusty, it has a strong possibility of letting loose as a
block that can cause the car behind to panic. Much better to clear
the car before starting out in every case.

Oh, I do... especially the heavier stuff, and any real quantity of any

    Hi Nancy,

It depends on how good the pizza is.... :) Back then, it could
have been heated up in the oven (yeah, I know, wasting good
electricity)... I ended up eating our leftover pizza a night
that NB>> Richard wasn't feeling good, and didn't want supper.... I
    did
nuke it... mostly because I really didn't want a cold supper
    that NB>> night.... :)

    Hopefully he's doing better now,

Yes... he actually was feeling better by later that night....

Good, I'm trying not to get sick so I can have my surgery next month.

and I don't blame you for not wanting a cold supper. They're
forecasting the possibility of snow again for us, this week end.

Yeah, when things are cold, a warmed meal is a bit nore satisfying, usually... ;) We've got more snow now.... and temps in the 20s...
winter may have actually settled in now....

We're in 30s during the day, 20s at night. Weather Underground is no
longer saying snow for the week end but we usually do get some in
January and February. It's usually mixed with ice tho.

That is a priority. Gail did get sick with a kidney stone and had to
    postpone.

In another message, I saw that you are going to get a walker. I hope
that you also get an ice machine and what we call a dog leash. The
leash is a stiff material with a loop at one end to hook over your foot.
It helps a lot to move your leg with the new knee out of bed, etc.

and I don't blame you for not wanting a cold supper. They're

We did get snow today (Sunday). They predicted one to three inches. I
make it as more like eight. The forcast is for mid 30s for a high next
few days, so some of it might melt.

    Hi Dale,

Good, I'm trying not to get sick so I can have my surgery next month.

That is a priority. Gail did get sick with a kidney stone and had to postpone.

So far, so good. I had an attack of bronchitis in December but am well
over it now--my primary care doctor cleared me last week.

In another message, I saw that you are going to get a walker. I hope
that you also get an ice machine and what we call a dog leash. The

Nothing has been said about it yet but if they don't tell me about it at pre-op, I will ask. A friend of mine had it when she had her shoulders
done (reversals, putting the ball on the top, socket on the arm) and
said it was a big help.

leash is a stiff material with a loop at one end to hook over your
foot. It helps a lot to move your leg with the new knee out of bed,
    etc.

We've got a "stretch out strap"--it's not rigid but would probably be
useable the same way. This is a piece of web type material, about 12'
long, doubled over on itself, sewn down every so often on the one side
to make loops. I used it for one exercise for a week before the
therapist decided to take it out of the set I had to do.

Another thing we splurged on is a love seat--dual recliner with a
console in the middle. The recliners we had, when the foot part was
raised, had an empty space, metal bar (about 3" wide), another empty
space and then the foot rest. No decent support for the knee on those.
The love seat recliners have full length leg support--much better and a
    lot more comfortable.

and I don't blame you for not wanting a cold supper. They're
forecasting the possibility of snow again for us, this week end.

We did get snow today (Sunday). They predicted one to three inches.
I make it as more like eight. The forcast is for mid 30s for a high
next few days, so some of it might melt.

We didn't get any but had a few sleet pellets. Today started with a high
of about 60 (near midnight); it's now 7:40 pm and is 33.2 and falling.
It's a dry front, but cold--we're not supposed to get above about 35
    tomorrow.

More that their idea of what was important was different from
ours... ;) During the day on Friday, there were already the
solar-powered highway signs telling people that there was a
driving advisory for Saturday because of the incoming storm...
    :)

No surprise; probably been a lot of those signs out this winter. (G)

Actually not that many so far this season.... just for the storm, and
then again this past week for the predicted ice storm and then the
high winds advisory.... a little flurry of advisaries...

    As always.
And hopefully will turn out quite tasty... :)

We're still letting it rest, and the smoke to equalise--usually figure
to give it a couple of months. Otherwise the outside parts have too
