I use it fairly often for staple items and some frozen foods. Produce

Probably so, will look into it when we go down there.

34,000 people signed up for their Shopper's Club cards. Wegman's will
do quite well in Raleigh. (G)

Sounds like. :) Rather impressive stats there... :) Have there been follow-up articles telling how happy all those shoppers are with the

Yesterday's (Sunday's) paper had a front page article comparing prices
at 9 stores--Aldi, Carlie C's IGA, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Lidl,
Lowes, Publix, Target, Walmart and Wegman's. The wrap up was:

"In a nutshell, we found that overall, Walmart has the largest selection
    and lowest prices.
But we also found that Wegman's--at least in the products we
researched--had lower prices than Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Lowes and
Publix on nearly every single item. Again, these are regular prices.
In many cases. Wegman's even matched 9or came very close to) the super
low priced stores like Aldi, Lidl and Walmart on items like eggs, butter
    and milk.
Of course, we had no way to factor in the quality of the shopping experience--the warmth of that friendly cashier at your neighborhood
store, the nostalgia of shopping a chain you've known for years or the excotement of knowing dinner is going home with you from the Asian food
bar. That's the X-factor you'll have to bring to the equation."

They shopped a set list of items, no store brands, no sales, etc from
Oct. 8-15. We were at Wegman's last Friday (18th) at about 5 pm--got
what we needed plus several wants or "let's trys" (including an oven
ready chicken cacciatori--tonight's supper) and were out of there by
5:45. The parking lot and store were quite full, didn't try the parking
    deck

Richard was amused by the characterization of Wegmans as the

I'll have to look next time we go; this last trip was to get the
broccoli needed for a triple recipe (and still Steve didn't get any at
church) broccoli salad. I couldn't quite fit all of it into the bowl I
was using so put the last bit into a small bowl to go with tonight's
supper. I also gave him a few bites of mine; I'd gone thru the line
before him and was able to get some. I guess I'll have to make a
    quadrupal batch next time. (G)

Exactly... here at home, Richard bags the groceries, I wheel
them out in the cart, and Richard loads the car...

Steve loads the truck for us. He'll repack perishables into an
insulated bag, other stuff either into the other side of the double
bag or keeps them in the store's bags.

Yup, you have an even more involved system... ;)

If I were to be doing a major shopping trip without Richard
around (at this point highly unlikely), the curbside pickup might
be an option, but I still like to pick out my own food anyway, so
probably would just utilize Helping Hands to the car... :)

I'd rather pick my own stuff too. That was one down side to the
ride'em carts--getting to stuff on the upper parts of the produce

Probably so, and not happy that Raleigh got the first one. (G)

than the previous newly opened Wegmans stores... ;)

Yesterday's (Sunday's) paper had a front page article comparing

Sounds overall rather positive towards Wegmans... and that's
basically just covering the basics of what's in the store and how
it's priced... not even the bells and whistles.... :)

But a good solid plug for the new kid in town.

    Indeed. :)

We've done the oven-safe chicken cacciatori a few times, what
    did you think of it...?

It was good, but we've been spoiled by the one our friend at one of
the local Italian places makes. His is better, overall. I was surprised that the Wegman's version had a little bit of heat to it--not much, but noticeable.

Well, Wegmans isn't quite the "local Italian place", but they do have a
good sense of Italian... I think that may be part of the family
heritage, and they have done a good deal of research for their Italian
Classics lines.... Their jarred Grampa's Sauce (or whatever the full
name is) has some heat to it... it uses hot Italian sausage, along with
some hot peppers.... That's what I generally get....

Some of the departments can have a bit of "Disney" to them,
    too... :)

I'll have to make a quadrupal batch next time. (G)
And use an humoungous bowl to put it all in.... ;) Or take it to
church in two bowls.... bring out the second when the first is
    emptied... ;)

Either of those options would work. We usually have this picnic at a
local park so one bowl would be the better option--unless we took a cooler. We'd had enough rain the previous few days that there was
standing water in parts of the park we generally use so an executive decision was made to have the meal at the church house.

The cooler could be a good option.... :)

BTW, browsing "Whole Foods from the Whole World", offshoot of WFfthWF,
put out by LLLI in 1992, saw some bread recipies that might work well
for peach bread. I'll have to do some experimenting........

    Sounds promising... :)

SocSec is once a month on the third Wednesday, we've kept the same
system... There was a period of time when he was being paid every other
week, but we found that we still did better shopping weekly... :)

You should have seen the Ford Escape one year up in VT--we
shopped for the group, for the week, and with our stuff in the
car already, it was "fun" finding nooks and crannies to put
the groceries for the group. We did it tho, and then headed
over to where we were staying for the week to off load.
I can imagine the Escape in VT... We've had similar fun when
taking other people out shopping, when they bought far more
than we would normally... and needed to find room in the car
for them, a walker, and their and our groceries... :)

Tight fit but you did it, as we did also.

    Yup. :)

Concentrated Area of Retired Yankees, not necessarily all
western NYers. Enough people that appreciate Wegman's tho. (G)
And Wegmans had already spread some into other parts of
Yankee-land, giving Cary-ites hope for the prospect... :)
In the mean time, they're mobbing the Raleigh store. We're
headed down there later today to return the one box of water and
    pick up a few things.
And did they take back the lime mint, and let you have another
    flavor in exchange....?

We just took the cash and used it for other purchases. Figured we had enough water for the time being.

They're good about making good on a purchase that the customer isn't
    happy with... :)

Got some leeks there on a previous trip, made potato-leek soup
    this week--it'll be repeated.

    Sounds good... :)

Probably so, and not happy that Raleigh got the first one. (G)
But probably somewhat consoled that it was still much more
available than the previous newly opened Wegmans stores... ;)
Yes, I think the closest one otherwise is in Virginia Beach.
Nobody wants to make a day trip up there just to shop at Wegmans...
the Fort Bragg commissary would be closer to us than VB.
And that has only just opened, too... :) As you said, the
Cary-ites are mobbing the Raleigh store in the meantime... :)

The greater Triangle area is invading the store!

Wegmans had best get moving quickly on the rest of the stores planned
    for the area... ;)

    Hi Nancy,

Yup, you have an even more involved system... ;)
Comes from both living in a warmer climate and doing the bulk
of the shopping once a month (when Steve was in the Army).
The once a month would do it, for sure...
He only got paid once a month so it made sense to do the bulk of the
some but part of that was that the girls were growing older (and
    consuming more) as well.

Even when the money came in once a month here, we still shopped every week.... The money went into savings, and came out in needed amounts

Prior to Steve's enlisting we tried to put some money into savings, some
into checking and held out some to live on. When he went active, DoD was experimenting with direct deposit--we've had it ever since spring of
    1983 without any problems.

each week... Now that the pension is once a month on the first, and
the SocSec is once a month on the third Wednesday, we've kept the same

We get SS but on a different Wed.

So we've noticed. They refunded the whole amount, not deducting any for
    the 2 cans we drank.

It was; I'll have to post the recipe.
