CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission)
    the FCC.
The theoretical oversight is unlikely to be effective in
    remote monopolized areas.
It's not theoretical in Canada; complaints made to the CRTC get
listened to, checked out and acted upon.

You're making an increasingly strong case for
    emigration to Canada!

    Perhaps your provider plays fair?
    It has too!

I could see corporate lawyers throwing massive simian
wrenches into the enforcement system here. Perhaps your
lawyers are less smart or less predatory than ours.

new franchisee with starry dollar signs in his eyes
The new franchisee is pretty savvy.
It'll be interesting to see how they try to wring
    profit out of the operation.
Well Yellowknifers love KFC. The old store grossed $4M and netted
$1M per year. Of course the new store is more expensive and there
will be a mortgage but if it can gross $4M it ought to net 500K. Taco

If you like KFC, you'll love Popeye's.

Bell should add to that profit somewhat and I'm sure Starbucks will
make some of contribution too, although the local independents are
well entrenched and Tim Hortons is always the market leader in
most markets in Canada. And we just went from one to two Timmy's
    outlets.

Well, you've exceeded 20K population by now, so
    that makes sense.

have lots of Caribbean, African, Filipino and recently
Australian immigrants here and almost all of them have adapted
    and survived.
Nobody's been found frozen into a statue?
Nope. But some of the Australians and one Texan went back home after
    one winter here!

    Hardly surprising, that.

    Sangamore Spirit rye whiskey
I picked up a bottle of rye today. My favourite cheap but good rye,
Alberta Pure, is no longer stocked and I saw a new label that
declared itself to be from the Canadian Five Star Distilling Company
so I picked up a bottle. It tasted veery familiar so I Googled the
name. It turns out that Diago who bought Seagrams from the Bronfmans
decided to sell off some of their lower priced, lower quality
products to Sazarac including Seagrams which is in the process of
being re-branded. I'm drinking Seagrams 5 star with a new label.

Abandoning the low end? How self-destructive. For
    the bottom line, that is.

Roast Chicken with Mushroom Pan Sauce
Categories: Celebrity, Rhode Island, Australia, California
    Serves: 4

    5 lb whole chicken, trussed
    1 Tb melted butter
1 lb assorted mushrooms, stems trimmed, thickly sliced
    1 Tb chopped shallots
    1 ts chopped garlic
    1 Tb all-purpose flour
    1 1/2 c reduced sodium chicken broth
    1 sprig thyme
2 ts finely chopped fresh parsley

    1. Preheat oven to 425F. Place large ovenproof frying pan
in oven until hot. Place chicken, breast side up, in
pan and brush with butter. Insert Bosch oven meat probe
into the thickest part of the chicken thigh.

    2. Roast chicken in oven 75 min or until skin is crisp
and golden and the meat probe registers 165F. Transfer
chicken to board to rest 10 min (do not wipe out pan).

    3. Heat same pan over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and
cook, stirring frequently to scrape up browned bits (fond)
from bottom of pan, for 6 min or until mushrooms are
browned and tender. Stir in shallots and garlic and cook,
stirring frequently, for 2 min or until shallots are
tender. Add flour and stir 1 min. Whisk in broth and thyme.

    4. Simmer, whisking constantly, for 2 min or until gravy
thickens. Remove thyme stems. Stir in parsley. Season gravy
    with salt and pepper.

    5. Serve chicken with gravy.

It's not Utopia: we have cold weather, high taxes and extremely high
alcohol taxes. I don't love taxes but I will acknowledge though that governments need high taxes to deliver a high level of services.

    Perhaps your provider plays fair?

    It has too!

I could see corporate lawyers throwing massive simian

Or perhaps the CRTC lawyers are equally mean and nasty too and up to
the task. On the internet side, they just worked jointly with the
RCMP to shut down some particularly nasty spammers who were using
RAT malware. The only spam I get these days is of foreign origin
    (including American) not Canadian.

If you like KFC, you'll love Popeye's.

I do! I haven't been to one in ages but it has recently expanded
into Canada and there are now outlets in Edmonton. Nandos too. I'll
probably hit both of them the next time I'm there. That won't be for
a while thing as our next trip to Alberta is only going to be as far
as Roslind's "hometown" which is in fact just a tiny unincorporated
community between High Level, Fort Vermilion and Le Crete. It's
called Rocky Lane; you can Google Map and Wikipedi it if you care
to. It has a rural community hall and a regional school with a fleet
of buses, but no stores or services. They are having a community
reunion at that hall on Aug 3. Lexi and Charlee will be going with
    us.

They got a ton of cash for the deal and it might give their premium
brands more respectability. That's their hope anyway. (I note that Constellation Brands and Gallo have not sold off or shut down their
    worst brands yet though.)

    Phyllo pastry
    sirene cheese
    eggs
    spinach
    sorrel
    browned meat
    leeks
    rice

Zelnik is a traditional pastry from the Balkans composed of thin
layers of phyllo pastry filled with combinations of sirene, eggs,
sorrel, browned meat, leeks and rice; in winter, the filling may
also include brined cabbage and spinach, from which the dish derives
its name: zelje (Macedonian) means spinach. Zelnik is served with
yoghurt and its best eaten warm.

Zelnik is similar to a dish popular in Turkey and Central Asia,
called yesil borek (green patty) Borek. Unlike zelnik, cabbage Borek
is made for holidays and festivals and is served with kefir. The
crust and the layers of Borek are thicker and other spices are used.
Mostly Zelnik is made with leek and sirene (white cheese).

That's much like my current adopted "town", Limestone. There is a little gas station about two miles down the road and two Dollar General stores (thankfully) about a seven minute drive northeast and southeast of my location. However, Limestone is famous for four things:

    1) Daniel Boone was born here along the Nolichucky River. Yes, that Daniel Boone. I live about two miles from Daniel Boone Birthplace State Park. (He hated being called "Davy".)
    https://tnstateparks.com/parks/david-crockett-birthplace

    2) The Colonel George Gillespie Stone house: this house has stood here for over 200 years and was used in a movie (I don't remember the name). It's a beautifully maintained home about 5/8 mile from me.

http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM6QNX_Gillespie_Col_George_House_Limestone_ TN (has a recent picture)

    3) The Battle of Limestone Station: Limestone Station, as it was called then, was just that: a railroad station. The railroad station still stands buried in years of underbrush and the railroad still passes through though as a CSX freight-only line. There was a Civil War battle here.
    https://tinyurl.com/y287nax7 (tngenweb.org)

    4) According to the creator of "The Beverly Hillbillies", Granny from the show was born and raised here in Limestone, Tennessee. :D From imdb.com: "Season 9's episode, The Beverly Hillbillies: The Clampetts Meet Robert Audubon Getty Crockett (1971), revealed that the Clampet's hail from Limestone, TN, and not the Ozarks as previously assumed. Granny is an ardent admirer of Daniel Boone; and comes from "Boone country." Limestone, TN is in northeast Tennessee, where Daniel Boone once lived."
