My older brother used to play D&D. For whatever reason, I never got
into it though. I'd sometimes stay up that late playing multiplayer
    PC games with people though.

My multiplayer addiction was cooperative multiplayer DOOM. We'd play at work after hours until early morning. While I played Quake/Quake II deathmatches, it didn't compare to going through levels as a team.

That's cool. I haven't had much experience with multiplayer cooperative. M of the time, I'd play deathmatch games. In more recent years, sometimes I'v enjoyed capture the flag games with Unreal Tournament & such.

I have some experience with multiplayed cooperative with Halo and Halo 2, but those are a completely different generation of games. By then you had all this mechanic of taking cover for "healing" et all. That said I think Halo 1 and 2 are the most modern FPS I have managed to enjoy.

We play Pathfinder. It runs off enhanced D&D 3.5 rules. We've been playing that over 10 years now. D&D 4.0 was bad, and 5 seems too far out there. Prior to the Covid crap we'd get together once a month. We started around 77 also, with the White Box. Fun times.

I am not a fan of D&D 4.0, but I don't think it was as bad as people claims it was. If they had released it with other name, it would have been remembered as an ok roleplaying game with heavy skirmishing mechanics. The game only became unworkable once your adventures hit parangon tier (10+ lvl). After that point, combats were decided in a couple of turns and everythign after that was a grind to see how long it took the losers to die.

D&D 5 reminds me of Castles and Crusaders. The core mechanics are very basic and feel like a reminiscence of the OSR, but resource and skill management are New School. It works extremely well for megadungeon campaigns as long as no character falls behind the rest of the group by a lot of XP.
